Spring has sprung

Hello Carson City and welcome to Sunday, April 7, 2019. How's your weekend going? We're heading into another partly sunny spring day, with a daytime high in the mid-60s. Step outside, go for a bike ride, walk or hike and take in the available sunshine while it lasts as another chance of rain showers are headed our way by Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Good morning Carson City! Today is Saturday, April 6. While it's going to be a bit cloudy today, we'll have a high of 56 degrees. Sunday and Monday are almost hitting 70, though, with highs at 67 and 68!

On the docket for today is a Celtic Music concert, a Ducks Unlimited Banquet, the April Carson City Wine Walk, farming workshops, kitten parties, and more.

With a little help from the wind and a birds-eye view, we're flying into Friday, April 5, 2019 with plenty to do and see as we get ready for the weekend. National Weather Service forecasters say it will be a breezy day with some rain. But don't let that dampen your day as there's art showings, live music and hilarious comedy venues at the Brewery Arts Center and Carson Nugget.

As matters at the legislature continue, we are winding up for another weekend full of activities, including the downtown wine walk and a bevy of shows at the Brewery Arts Center. We may see some showers today, Friday and early Saturday, typical for the early days of spring. Stay tuned.

Whether it is a mid-morning or afternoon walk or evening bike ride or quick hike, step outside and enjoy the day.

Good morning Carson City and welcome to Tuesday, April 2, 2019. We're looking at a steady flow of showers today, according to the National Weather Service with snow in the upper elevations of the Sierra. There is a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight for the west slope of the Sierra. Today in town we have events that range from a Carson High School team fundraiser to movies to politics to fitness. Enjoy your day.

Well the weekend sure went fast as we say goodbye to March. Now we're heading into Monday, April 1, 2019 where pranks, larks and tom foolery are orders of the day. No fooling when it comes to the weather though. We may see a slight chance of showers in the afternoon and evening with more of a chance of rain on Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Welcome Carson City to Sunday, March 31, 2019. The last day of the month will bring sunny skies and a daytime high somewhere in the low 60s. Ideal spring weather before the next system arrives Monday bringing with it warmer temperatures but showers as well. Today there's art gallery showings, two children's theater performances, a bike ride and a tour of the stone Wungnema House at Mills Park.

These are the amaryllis that my mom has been growing for years. She started with just the red lion amaryllis but recently she got the green amaryllis. Amazingly somehow this bulb that had always grown and bloomed as a red lion is now blooming half and half. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a beauty blossoming in our window.

Come on in and enjoy browsing the new art in the "Spring has Sprung" show running now through May 3 at the Nevada Artists Association Carson City gallery located in the Brewery Arts Center.

There is something about the start of Spring that makes Sundays seem more pleasant; despite the fact that the weekend is on its downhill slide. There are always pleasant things to do in Carson City come rain, snow, wind or shine.

As if on cue with the change of seasons, Spring daffodils have begun flowering in Carson City. Daffodils, an early Spring bulb, are blooming by the dozens, in fact, around Carson City's downtown historic west side district.

Some trees have also begun to blossom, while many others are sporting buds that are on the verge. Soon Spring will be busting out all over around the Nevada state capital.

Happy Saturday Carson City! Today we have the Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market at Fuji Park, the “Spring has Sprung” Art Show, rummage sales, and more! We’ll be looking at a day full of spring showers and gentle breezes, with a high of 49 degrees and a low of 25.

Entries are now being accepted at Nevada Artists Association for its "Spring has Sprung Show." Subject matter need not be about Spring, but it's great if it is after the Big Freeze we've had.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Week than gorgeous weather that you just can’t help but enjoy. Join Muscle Powered and our Parks and Recreation Department at the Silver Saddle Ranch for a presentation and trash mob. Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

The Nevada Artists Association is presenting “Spring Has Sprung,” a new show of works by member artists at its gallery at 449 King Street in Carson City. The show will run from April 2 to May 4 at the spacious, recently refurbished gallery, adjacent to the Brewery Arts Center complex.

Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. There’s nothing unlucky about this Friday the Thirteenth. Spring is in full bloom, the sun is shining, and the weekend is hours away. Beers and Brats returns to Fuji Park; the girls of Nevada Sharks Fastpitch look forward to seeing you. Upstairs in the ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center, a special show featuring Pioneer High School students’ art begins at 5 p.m. Enjoy a night on the town with live music at the Fandango, Max Casino, Bella Fiore, Westside Pour House, and Glen Eagles. Want to learn something new? The Gold Hill Hotel, the Dayton Historical Society, and the Douglas County Historical Society are all offering a glimpse into the past. The American Sign Language Club at Western Nevada College invites you to an evening of storytelling, poetry, music, and fun at their ‘Open Hands Night.’ Empire Ranch is starting up its 9 and Dine events tomorrow, the only catch is that you’ve got to register by noon today. You’ll find dinner music at Glen Eagles, Sassafras, and Living the Good Life.

Throw a little sunshine my way and I start thinking about Lake Tahoe. Pints and Paddles, the happy hour cruise aboard the M.S. Dixie, has returned to Zephyr Cove. Break up the workday with a stroll along the Wellness Trail: the Wednesday walkers begin at noon if you’d like company. Living the Good Life features great food, fun bartenders, and tonight a Jazz Jam lead by Rocky and Judith. Sassafras lives up to its Eclectic Food Joint reputation again: The Moody Motion Tour featuring Cryptic Wisdom, Whiteout, and Jack The Ripper hits the stage tonight.

I think we are all learning to take advantage of sunny spring days when they arrive. Appreciate the new blooms as you explore the historic downtown as part of a City-sponsored scavenger hunt. The Mile High Jazz Band takes over Comma Coffee tonight with Merry May Jazz. Learn the ins and outs of fire spinning if you head to the Controlled Burn Community Practice at A to Zen. Let the Carson Chamber Singers transport you to Broadway: their spring concert is tonight at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

TUESDAY:

Today’s sky has something special going on. A transition of Mercury across the sun occurs from sunrise until about noon. Please do not attempt to watch it without protective eyewear (sunglasses are not enough.) Head to the WNC Observatory to take a look, or watch it online HERE. Early risers can also take advantage of a chat with Supervisor Jim Shirk at Grandma Hattie’s.

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Nothing will rain on our parade, Carson City. In addition to the monthly wine walk, the weekend offers a carnival, train rides, the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and more. Tonight, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts their spring musical ‘42nd Street.’ Find improv at the Brewery Arts Center or Comedy at the Carson Nugget. Drinking with Clowns hits the stage at Sassafras and Motown is on the menu at Living the Good Life. Food with friends is in order at Silver City’s Community Dinner Night or at A to Zen’s first ‘Fancy Friday’ open mic night.

The weekend is getting started early. Cinco de Mayo brings out drink specials, parties, and fun throughout the valley. Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, so head to Carson Mall for something special or swing by the Elks Club after 4 p.m. to grab tickets for their Champagne Brunch. The RSVP Spring Carnival kicks off tonight with family night: all rides are a dollar.

May the Fourth be with you, Carson City. Today is Star Wars day, among other things. It’s also Whiskey Wednesday at the Firkin and Fox, karaoke night at Crossroads, and Line Dance Day at Carson Lane. For the Star Wars Aficionados, then you’ll want to head to the Carson Library or to Downtown Minden for light sabers and costume parties. Art lovers will find a new exhibit to celebrate at Comma Coffee. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint has the Junebugs performing tonight; this is the fun you’re looking for.

WEDNESDAY: Star Wars Day - May the Fourth Be With You

Tuesday has arrived and brings with it a splash of art, cinema, and nature. The Nevada Discovery Ride is the reason for a fundraiser and fair at Sierra Place Senior Living: learn about the ride, Nevada’s wild horses, gold-panning and more. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings ole blue eyes, Frank Sinatra, to the Brewery Arts Center: The Man with the Golden Arm is this month’s movie. Late artist, Craig Shephard, will be honored at the Nevada Arts Council this evening.

May day has come and gone, but just barely. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.
