Column: Anger or excitement can cause financial fraud problems among elderly

A new study from the Stanford Center on Longevity found that anger and excitement — known as “high arousal” emotions — can lead to risky decision making, especially for older folks.

Many elderly are victims of financial fraud. The Federal Trade Commission estimated that in 2011, 7.3 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 were victims of financial fraud.

WNC Softball: Wildcats earn first Scenic West Athletic Conference road win

The extended pitching of Kristina George, and home runs by Triniece Lesky and Dakota Robinson propelled Western Nevada College to a doubleheader softball split against Snow College on Friday in Ephraim, Utah.

Kimbri Herring blanked the Wildcats of Carson City on three hits in the opening game as the Badgers won, 6-0, but George hurled a complete game after throwing 3 1/3 innings in the opener as WNC bounced back for a 5-2 victory.

JoAnne Skelly: Don’t jump the gardening gun

With all the nice weather we have been having, gardeners’ fingers itch to plant and prune. Any gardener who has been here for a number of years, knows this is a false spring.

Although people new to the area may be wooed into thinking planting time is here, I caution “Let the gardener beware.” We will see the return of cold weather and freezing temperatures. For example, I lost all my apple and lilac blossoms last year with one short overnight freeze in April.

You know when it's a true Nevada wind storm when a trampoline flies

High winds around Carson City this Monday afternoon have caused trees to uproot, limbs to snap, fences to topple and a trampoline that blew into this backyard power pole in the 900 block of Chernus Drive.

UNR biologist, National Geographic Explorer helps tag rare freshwater monster fish in Cambodia

As Cambodians celebrated Independence Day on Monday, Nov. 9, fishermen near Phnom Penh made a very special catch befitting the occasion: a rare Mekong Giant Catfish, also known as the “royal fish” because of its enormous size.

JoAnne Skelly: When to Harvest Vegetables

Readers often ask me when vegetables are ready for harvest. Some veggies have a long harvest window, but others may be tasty one day and bitter the next. Of course, if a freeze is expected, many of our vegetables end up being harvested early. I’ve ripened many a green tomato on the windowsill.

Event Date:
June 29, 2015 (All day)

Where did June go? It’s already the 29th, and Independence Day festivities are coming up fast. Talking about time flying, it was 40 years ago that Steve Wozniak tested his first prototype of the Apple I computer. Personal computing has never been the same. It’s not National Apple Day (although those who stood in line for the first iPhone release eight years ago today might disagree), it’s National Camera Day. Find your favorite subject and snap away.

MONDAY:

  • Industrial Art at the CCAI Gallery in the Courthouse: 885 E. Musser (8am-5pm)
  • ’New Work’ by artist Pasha Rafat at the Nevada Arts Council: 716 N. Carson St. (8am-5pm)

Column: Rent or own? Stay or go?

Especially older adults have a choice to consider, rent or own a home? Like most questions, it gets answered with more questions.
Do you want to stay in your home in retirement or do you want to move? If you stay, what will it cost for property taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs and utilities? Will that total housing cost be easy or difficult to pay on the retirement income?

Cooperative Extension: St. Paddy's Day is traditional time to plant peas

Pea planting time is here. I love shucking peas and eating them like candy. I also like eating tender pods right off the vine. The good news is that peas are easy to grow. Garden or English peas are grown for their seeds (the peas) and snow peas, sugar peas and sugar snap peas are grown for their edible pods.

Garden peas can be either climbers that need the support of a trellis or low-growing varieties. Snow peas also come as climbing vines that need a trellis or as low-growing varieties. Sugar snap peas grow on tall vines and require a trellis for support.

WNC Baseball: Six-Run Seventh Dooms Wildcats

After permitting just one run in 25 innings over four games, Western Nevada College gave up six runs in a game-turning seventh inning on Saturday in Henderson.

NDOW: Ice on Western Nevada waterways is never safe or thick enough to support humans

While we’ve experienced fits of bitter cold weather around Western Nevada this winter, many local water ways may indeed have thin layers of ice on them but venturing out on that ice at any time, regardless, is dangerous and should never be tried, a Nevada Department of Wildlife official said.

Friday, Jan. 2: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
January 2, 2015 (All day)

I don't know about you, but I am ecstatic to hear that this cold snap is on it's way out. It has been a chilly few days and I'm ready for my teeth to stop chattering. This first Friday of the year has plenty of options for fun. Join Mikey and Heidi at the Brewery Arts Center for Improv Night, enjoy some red-dirt country music at Caterpillar's Hookah Lounge (and make sure to wish proprietress, Dana, a happy birthday), or travel just outside our boundaries to see local favorites Notch 8 at the Genoa Bar.

FRIDAY:

Cooperative Extension: The Mistake in Staking Trees

The things people do to trees sometimes horrify me. Topped trees or those with hacked instead of pruned limbs; trees planted under power lines; and trees left without water in long ago removed lawns are a few of my pet peeves. Improper staking is another.
