The last days of 2014 in Carson City will be windy, cold with possible snow

UPDATE: While not packing a lot of moisture, a cold storm system is headed our way beginning late Monday, bringing gusty winds, cold temperatures, and the potential for light snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow could begin as early as 8 p.m. Monday night with the main window for snowfall being 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected through the Reno and Carson City areas with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville. 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected west of Highway 95 near Walker Lake.

Reno to London nonstop flights to begin in December 2015

Northern Nevada's first non-stop flight service between Reno and London’s Gatwick Airport will begin in December 2015, Reno-Tahoe International Airport officials announced Tuesday.

In partnership with Ski Lake Tahoe and the gaming community, the airport will offer twice-a-week service between Reno-Tahoe and London, England on Thomas Cook Airlines.

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts host job fairs through October

More than 3,400 seasonal employees are needed by Vail Resorts for the upcoming ski season at their Lake Tahoe resorts Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar. Three job fairs will be held in October where perspective employees can meet with resort personnel and have interviews.

This first job fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Cliffs Lodge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Wind shift keeps King Fire smoke away from Carson City

The King Fire, which started a week ago, Sept. 13, has now burned nearly 81,000 acres east of Pollock Pines in El Dorado County. As of Saturday morning, the human-caused fire is 10 percent contained.

Early season deal on three 2014-15 passes at Lake Tahoe ski resorts ends Labor Day

Monday, Sept. 1 will be the last chance to receive the early-season rate on Lake Tahoe Local, Tahoe Value, and Epic season passes — all of which offer access to Heavenly Mountain, Kirkwood and Northstar California resorts.

Heavenly protests Forest Service plan for Tahoe

Heavenly Mountain Resort is protesting portions of the U.S. Forest Service’s 15-year land management plan for Lake Tahoe.

In a letter sent to Forest Service chief Thomas Tidwell, Heavenly claims a plan to restrict future ski-resort development to 200 acres would apply collectively to all four ski resorts in the Tahoe Basin.

Snow arrives in Carson City and Sierra with more on the way

The snow has arrived to Carson City. About 2 or 3 inches thus far this morning and at least 10 inches being reported for Lake Tahoe area ski resorts.

A Winter Advisory for the Carson City area and a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra is underway. Travel conditions in the Sierra are slow going with some spinouts reported on Highway 50 and State Route 207 and off of Clearview.

While the short-term forecast shows a change this week from the overall stubborn pattern of warm and dry conditions over the region, the drought for this part of the far west is severe and unless we get a lot of snow in the coming few weeks, we're going to face much more serious issues this coming summer.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts rejoice with first significant snow of the season

The season's first significant snowfall covered the Sierra Monday with nearly a foot of powder at Lake Tahoe area resorts and 3-5 inches at lake level.

Anticipation for additional snowfall along with summer investments pays winter dividends at Tahoe South this season. Millions of capital expenditures at the three area ski resorts this year will complement revitalization efforts throughout town to create new options on where to stay, play and dine during the 2013-14 season.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood to hold October job fairs

Job seekers are invited to have an experience of a lifetime this winter in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort hire a combined total of 2,300 seasonal employees for the 2013-2014 winter season.

Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400. Three job fairs are scheduled throughout October, giving candidates an opportunity to meet with managers and find the best-suited jobs.

Carson Valley Visitors Authority to hire spokeswoman to showcase area attractions, amenities

The job is simple: tell visitors why Carson Valley, Nev. is “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” all while riding a horse. The Carson Valley Visitors Authority is looking for one horse savvy woman to become the “Carson Valley Rider.”

Launched in 2012, the “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” campaign plays upon the area’s gateway status as a tourism outfitter for the region. From Topaz Lake and the Pine Nut Mountains to the Tahoe Rim Trail, Carson Valley is looking for a storyteller to bring it all together.

Bingo party tonight at Carson Middle School; more than $7,000 in prizes to be won

North Lake Tahoe SnowFest first 10 days in March

North Lake Tahoe celebrates its long winter season with SnowFest, a 10-day carnival and one of the region’s most popular annual family celebrations. SnowFest is scheduled for March 1-10 and will be held at a variety of venues throughout North Lake Tahoe.

In its 32nd year, SnowFest, presented by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/ Resort Association, is expected to draw thousands of attendees, with the majority of events free to spectators.
