Two full days of features, documentaries, and short films with music as the uniting theme will be shown at the Carson City Community Center: 30 unique titles representing 29 different filmmakers from countries around the world. Blood Drum Spirit, a jazz band with an African influence, is the focus of one of those films and will be performing for free at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint this evening.

Take a stroll with Muscle Powered: today’s hike will wind through the far east side of Carson, from Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Artsy Fartsy Art Galley hosts an artist meet and greet for Catherine King; enjoy a glass of wine while discovering her newest work. Head down the rabbit hole, and you may wind up on McFadden Plaza. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings the recent live-action version of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen on the downtown stage.

Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. The Carson City Library has several activities planned today, and one of them might be what you’re looking for. Story time this morning is for the little ones. Just about everyone is welcome to participate in their weekly Lego Club build. Families will enjoy movie night; just make sure to register online if you’re planning on seeing Peter Rabbit with them this evening. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival is in full swing, so you’ll find plenty of music around.

The breeze is a welcome reprieve from hot summer afternoons and can do wonders clearing the smoke from the valley. On the other hand, that wind does local firefighters no favors if it just helps push the fire line faster. There may be some relief from the bad air today, but you’ll still want to take it easy.

Carson Street. Show producers are holding a casting call for extras to appear in the pilot at Alatte inside the Nugget Tuesday, August 7 from 4-7 p.m.

The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

The week-long celebration commences in the historic mining town of Virginia City, Nev. on Friday, Aug. 3 to Saturday, Aug. 4. Then it's down the mountainside to the Main Event in Reno-Sparks starting Sunday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018.

You may want to stick to indoor activities when the air quality is low like this. The Capital City Community Band has a free concert and ice cream social scheduled for this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome, and it’s hard to argue with ice cream on a day like this. If you are looking to start your own business, but still some legal guidance, you’ll find the ‘Lunch-n-Learn’ workshop at the Adams Hub extremely helpful.

Luckily, you’ll find some ways to entertain the kids without having to head outdoors. Head down for family story time at the Carson City Library with the young ones; older kids will want to check out the weekly Lego Club this afternoon. The Rally Route 50 West automotive scavenger hunt and race comes to an end this evening in McFadden Plaza with an announcement of the winners. Of course, he talked about Trumpian politics — along with guns and hunting — but he charmed the audience with great jokes and a rockin’ performance. A long line as the doors opened but people were inside in no time. A packed house filled TJ’s Corral at Carson Valley Inn for the continuation of the summer concert series.

Keep Tahoe Blue is hitting the lake shore this morning to help mitigate the aftermath of yesterday’s festivities; lend a hand if you can. If you are looking for something quiet today, check out our local art galleries: they all have revolving exhibits featuring a variety of artists. The True Grit Exhibit at Western Nevada College comes to a close tomorrow, so head up there before it hits the trail.

Family story time happens every Thursday morning, with Lego Club offered Thursday afternoons. Shine up the chrome and head to Buffalo Wild Wings for the weekly summer cruise night. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint is a great place for music, food, and friends: they’ll be featuring Little Mazarn on the stage tonight as the Texas group swings through the area on their cross-country tour.

The Rockabilly Riot roars into town and sets up shop at Mills Park for a whole weekend of vintage rat-rods and rock-n-roll. You’ll find the Extreme Motor Officers Challenge in the park, too, so expect it to be noisy. The Pony Express rides again, as it does every year, and retraces its historic route. Keep an eye out this evening for the rider heading east. Enjoy some blues, funk and rock courtesy of the Mylo McCormick Project at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park as part of their annual summer music series.

At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

Head down to Mills Park sometime this weekend to enjoy the Nevada State Fair, Rendezvous and Carnival. Carson Valley Days is an annual tradition for those who live in the Minden/Gardnerville area. Lampe Park will be hopping with live music, activities, and another carnival. You’ve probably noticed the very large tent erected by the Carson Mall. The Ramos Bros. Circus has come to town, and will be offering performances daily for the next 10 days. Read on, this is just the beginning.

The annual Westside Cruise ia a part of Bike Month, and one of the zanier events. Dress you and your bike up and head off to explore the historic district. Happy one year Anniversary to Battle Born Social. The restaurant and lounge will be celebrating with cocktails, appetizers and more; there is a $20 cover for the event, but that money will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.
Senator Square: Carson City School District students and their families displaced

Antonio and Alexis Trujillo’s family, and Jordan and Theodore Leyva’s family are now displaced following this incident.

The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

We will hold the ride next week same place and time (BAC 5:30 pm), just one week later (Thur 5/31).

After yesterday’s freakish hailstorm, we may as well be ready for anything. More thunderstorms might be on the way this afternoon, but I can’t promise they follow any kind of schedule. The first of the season Third Thursday Wine Walk in downtown Gardnerville is this afternoon, and you may want to bring an umbrella as you sip and stroll.
