As the days get longer and warmer, it’s worth it to check out the many trails and paths throughout the valley. Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

Tickets are available now for the second annual Nowruz “New Year” Celebration Feast to benefit the Veterans Healing Camp. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 27 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Casino Fandango Buffet Banquet Room in Carson City.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.

The Silver State Vertical Drop is an annual ski competition and community fundraising event put on by the Silver State Hotshots, a Carson City-based wildfire suppression crew.

Individuals or teams of 3-5 compete to safely ski as much vertical feet as possible in a 4-hour time period—the team with the highest average vertical feet skied wins. There are individual prizes for males and females who finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and a team prize for 1st place. In the past, these prizes have been donated to us from companies such as Moment Skis, Patagonia, and Smith Optics. 

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975, is thrilled to announce its newest fundraiser, "Evening with the Divas," a once in a lifetime event.

The week winds down, but the happenings in Carson City are gearing up. Kids are going to have a fun time at the Carson Montessori Carnival Night. Help Relay for Life kick-off this year’s theme during their ‘Surfing for a Cure’ Luau at the Casino Fandango; you’ll have the opportunity to sign up your team, as well. No whining allowed, just fun times, at the Governor’s Mansion during tonight’s 'Let’s Wine Together' silent auction and wine fundraiser for the Carson High Band program.

Eagle Valley Middle School has an award-winning LEGO robotics team, and that extra-curricular falls firmly within the category of ‘STEAM.’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math in education is the focus of tonight’s ‘STEAM’ Night, chock-full of demonstrations, activities, experiments, and the aforementioned robots. Carson High’s more musically-inclined students can be found on the stage tonight at the Carson City Community Center for a Musical Theater and Choral Showcase. I’m going to apologize right now. I can’t anticipate what this storm system will throw at us, so some of these planned events could get cancelled. One event that is never afraid of Mother Nature is the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Come rain, shine, or blizzard, you’ll find can sip, stroll, and discover starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Carson Hot Springs aren’t afraid of a little snow, and a special visit from Megan the Mermaid will make the icy hot experience more memorable. The 15th Annual Crab Feed benefiting St. Teresa of Avila School in Carson City will be held on Saturday, March 3, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street.

The Carson City Band Association, Inc. will host its annual Wine and Silent Auction “Let’s Wine Together” fundraiser at the Governor’s Mansion on March 9.

There is absolutely a little bit of everything this weekend. There’s somewhere to volunteer, somewhere to eat some fundraising pancakes, join in an Asian New Year Lion Dance Parade, Beer Crawl in downtown Carson City, and get your Zumba on. I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Whether it’s the International Film Festival, the Vagina Monologues, or telescope viewing at the WNC Observatory: you can’t tell me there is nothing to do.

Gong hei fat choy, Carson City. Today kicks off the Asian New Year, the Year of the Dog. Explore a new culture at the International Film Festival at the Community Center. The afternoon offers independent documentaries, and this evening brings a renown Mexican Film about the life and times of iconic actor and comedian, Mario Moreno. Take a gander at the newly refreshed Carson City Library during their Grand Re-opening celebration. Start your weekend with some comedy, live music, swing dancing, or karaoke.

Hello fellow anglers, we now have another area in Nevada that is open to fishing. On Feb. 9, the Mason Valley Wildlife management area opened for the season.

This year, I am pleased to once again perform in and serve as hostess of the Carson City Vagina Monologues. This important monologue play, written by Eve Ensler to empower women, benefits Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

You can probably scratch ‘hitting the slopes’ off this weekend’s list of options, but you can hit the ‘hill’ instead: Prison Hill, to be exact. You’ll find the start and finish line for Ascent Runs’ ‘Love Can Be Cold’ 5 or 10K at the Prison Hill Southern Trailhead. If you’d rather crawl than run, Virginia City’s ‘Devil Made Me Do It’ Saloon Crawl might be for you. Find something special for your special someone at Artsy Fartsy’s annual Champagne and Jewelry Show or at the Valentine’s Craft Fair inside the Carson Mall.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is holding a grand opening Saturday for its newest endeavor, Expresso Yourself Cafe, an art experience with splashes of inspiration and creativity.

Ready, set, crawl. The Brew Crew’s monthly pub crawl kicks off from the Laxalt Plaza next to the Nugget and includes up several downtown area taverns and restaurants. If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School Historic Site during an encore lecture at the Nevada State Museum. Flashback to Beatle-mania at the Brewery Arts Center or karaoke at Battleborn Social are just some of your nightlife options.

RSVP Presents "Reaching For Zero", A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Awareness Brunch. The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion Nevada Room.

It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

Friends of the Carson City Library is hosting an ‘Evening in Paris’ New York New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31st from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street.

The air may be brisk, but the view from C-Hill is rewarding. Meet up with Muscle Powered in the Curry Street parking lot behind the Railroad Museum for their afternoon conditioning hike. Get the little ones to the Carson Library for story time today; the Library will be undergoing some much needed sprucing up and will be closed for up to two months starting Dec. 10. Community Roots in Dayton hosts an open house to show off their collection of gifts, flowers, and more.

With December arriving we are counting the days until Christmas. So deck the halls, get some jingle bells and wassail away this holiday season. Here's what's happening now through Christmas around Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City areas.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

Tis the season for visits with Santa, holiday twinkle lights, and craft fairs and festivals. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes.
