Mark Twain Elementary to host My School Color Run this Saturday at Mills Park
Submitted by editor on Tue, 04/18/2017 - 9:18amMark Twain Elementary School will host its community wide My School Color Run this Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. at Mills Park in Carson City.
Participants are encouraged to sign in early beginning at 9 a.m. The two mile event, a fundraiser for the school, is designed as all ages walk, jog or run and is for all fitness abilities.
During the event, participants pass through designated color zones as part of an enhanced spring time bounty of full on colorful experiences. This is the second annual event.

A mere seven days of school are all that remain and students are focused on the conclusion of the 2015-2016 school year at Carson High. Everyone is wearing a smile even though more final exams are still to come.

The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at their annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents The Taming of the Shrew (in the old west) on May 26.

The Classic Cinema Series returns to Galaxy Theater with a showing of Die Hard. Yippy-ki-yay.

The real cold shows up late Sunday and brings with it a good chance for snow. Mary Poppins would advise we bear it with a spoon full of sugar.
Volunteers sought for holiday food basket help for Thanksgiving and Christmas

Thanksgiving sign ups have begun. The "baskets" include a frozen turkey and a grocery bag with the items needed for the holiday meal.
Saturday, Nov. 21 the food bank will be preparing the grocery bags for distribution. The process takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Hot air balloons, the annual beard contest, the parade, tours of the Governor’s Mansion, and more make this time of year amazing. The carnival at Mills Park, and the Pow-Wow at the Carson Colony take the festivities to the next level.

Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

Those of you gearing up for Burning Man have just a few last days to prepare for the playa. And those headed to Western Nevada College have this one last weekend before it’s time to hit the books. If you have some free time, you may want to spend it looking at something beautiful. Industrial Art can be found at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Nevada Arts Council is currently displaying the traveling exhibit ‘Wally’s World.’ Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is where you’ll find one of a kind pieces made by regional artists, and there is something for almost any price range. Don’t miss the amazing photographs in the Sierra Room of the Community Center.

The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

UNR students, faculty and staff stand up for sexual assault awareness
Submitted by editor on Thu, 04/02/2015 - 10:51amSince the February release of results from a student survey regarding sexual conduct and safety, a number of efforts to strengthen a supportive campus climate, one with zero tolerance for sexual assault, sexual misconduct and other life-damaging actions, have been put in place at the University of Nevada, Reno.
In March, the University launched a 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline, allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.

Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.
Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

The first Saturday is always fun here, the Downtown Business Association hosts their monthly wine walk, rain, snow, or shine; and don't miss the raffle with some great prizes. The Elks Lodge is holding a hoop shoot contest for ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2015), with the winners headed to the District Hoop Shoot in Reno. This is also the last weekend to enjoy a sleigh ride at Sand Harbor; bundle up and enjoy a gorgeous view.

Nevada’s state engineers to cut ribbon at Carson City Library
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 04/08/2014 - 11:15amFrom the Carson City Library on April 14 at 6 p.m. a group of six engineers are slated to cut the grand opening ribbon on a traveling exhibit supported by the National Science Foundation, titled Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference.
Nevada State Engineer Mr. Jason King, P.E. as well as five previous Nevada State Engineers who served in the top post starting from 1967 through 2010 will join King to celebrate arrival of the engineering-focused interactive exhibit.
