The new semester starts today and WNC has plenty of ways to welcome you back. Don’t miss the new exhibit in the WNC Main Gallery: Victor Sandblom’s ‘Wind on the Sea, Tracks in the Sand.’ Let off some Monday night steam with karaoke at the Firkin and Fox. Or head to El Charro Avita and party it up with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

Thursday, August 20: Things to do in Carson City

The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.
THURSDAY: Jazz and Beyond
- Back to School at Carson Hot Springs (Free 17 and younger admission per paid adult; outdoor pools only; 7am-10pm)
- Fundraiser for Officer Carl Howell at the Café at Adele's (all day; 50% of all proceeds will be donated to the Officer's family)
Thursday, July 30: Things to do in Carson City

Funnel cakes, clowns, rabbits, circus games and more await. If you’re a classic car lover, then the Plaza Hotel is the place for you. The annual Silver Dollar Car Classic kicks off tonight with music and more before it moves on to its traditional place at Mills Park. Jelly Bread is in town and playing a free show at Sassafras, and celebrate your July birthday at the Carson Cigar Bar with their monthly birthday bash.

The soccer season is approaching, and you can sign-up for AYSO at the Carson City Library tonight from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. If you need to let off some steam tonight, head to the Firkin and Fox for karaoke.

Hand Bells and Wind Chimes

Tuned hand bells were first introduced in England in the late 17th century, as an adjunt to ringing the big bells found in church towers. Our local Methodist Church Bell Choir has been together for more than 10 yeas, and is led by Michele Powers. There is no better way to kick off our celebratory spirit. 6:30pm. Rein Of The Storm King

Award-winning author and nationally published Lake Tahoe historian Mark McLaughlin will present the history of the devastating sotrms to hit the Sierra during the winter of 1952. His presentation captures the compelling stories and dramatic images of railroad crews fighting mountain blizzards and deadly avalanches. During this ferocious winter, extreme weather shut down the railroad and highway system, while powerful snowstorms forced the evacuation of marines conducting winter survival training. 10:00am. Prehistoric Rock Art at Sierra Place

Rock art is one of Nevada’s most significant pieces of its history. Pictures of these creations that were achieved by ancient hunter foragers will be displayed with many styles, themes, and cultural rock art of Nevada. This event is free and opened to the public.
