Oct. 15 is finally here — the day Gov. Steve Sisolak said a statewide eviction moratorium that lasted more than six months would finally lift in Nevada.

Each October, Nevadans turn their attention to the state capitol, Carson City, home of the “official” Nevada Day Parade. Since 1938, the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City has been an annual coming together to celebrate Nevada’s heritage and the founding of this great state on October 31, 1864.

Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,941 for the week ending October 3, up 416 claims, or 5.5 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,525 claims.

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! The Nevada Artists Association will be accepting entries for the judged 2020 Nevada Day Show on Oct. 24. Instructions on how to enter, the entry form and rules can all be found at the Nevada Artists Association website here.

claims, or 8.2 percent, compared to last week’s total of 8,198 claims. This is the lowest weekly total of initial claims filed since mid-March.

This Sunday, Oct. 4, Biden supporters in Northern Nevada will be #RaftingForBiden along the Truckee River. Supporters have organized this socially distant outdoor event to show support for the Vice President and Senator Harris and to register volunteers for the campaign. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. The Carson City Wine Walk returns Saturday with COVID-19 restrictions. Virginia City will be filled with spooky events over the month of October with its signature Hauntober event. Conventions, sporting events with live audiences and large church gatherings will be allowed to resume once again after Gov. Steve Sisolak announced that he is raising the limit on public gatherings from 50 to 250 people — and even higher for some of the state’s largest venues.

Local baseball and softball players are invited to participate in a free Cap City Baseball Hitting Clinic. RSVP now to reserve your spot! Boys and girls ages 8-13 are welcomed to attend and participate. The clinic will be held on Oct. 1, 2020 at 5:30 PM at the John L. Harvey Field located at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Pkwy, Carson City.

The Capital City Arts Initiative and Western Nevada College present "Ink, Paper, Print" an exhibition with work by 12 regional artists in the college’s Bristlecone Gallery, 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City.

Earlier this month, members of Sierra Nevada Realtors spent time improving their communities all throughout the region. The annual Realtors Give Back event was special this year because it also included areas outside of Carson City. Members participated in community service as a group in Dayton and gave a generous monetary donation to the Fallon Youth Club and to the Boys and Girls Club of Carson City.

It may be a bit quiet around the high school lately, but this will not stop the CHS Student Council from making their senior year one to remember. Leadership Adviser Ann Britt said, “I am pleased to announce the Corona Virus cannot take the fun out of everything, so we are hosting a Spirit Week, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2, at CHS.”

In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Nevada State Parks will have a fee-free day on Saturday filled with hikes and tours. Glen Lucky was born on Sept. 27, 1952, down in Coronado, Calif. He was like many other boys, cute, smart, happy to arrive, however, he was diagnosed with a birth defect, cerebral palsy, and his parents were advised he might not live to see 15. But Glen did live to see 15. He started riding a bike at 15, and 16 and 17. Glen turns 68 on Sunday.

A federal district court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump’s campaign seeking to block Nevada’s expanded mail-in voting laws for the 2020 election over a lack of standing.

CARSON CITY — As a result of COVID-19, V&T Railway Commission has announced that fan favorite, Polar Express, has been cancelled for the 2020 season. In its place, V&T Railway will host Santa’s Drive-Thru Village, a socially distanced holiday event, Dec. 11-13 and Dec. 18-24.

RENO — In time for the holidays, Alaska Airlines will add new service between Reno-Tahoe International and Palm Springs and Los Angeles beginning Dec. 17.

Through the week ending September 12, there have been 686,683 initial claims filed in 2020, 665,031 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Steve Sisolak controls millions of votes, that mail-in ballots can be accepted without signatures and that Republicans likely wouldn’t be sent mail-in ballots but dogs and dead people would.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City has been around since 1976, and it was the hope of then arts activist Betty Block (Brogan) and other artists who needed a special and permanent space to showcase their diverse talents that the BAC would serve as the very heart of the local arts community bringing the arts under one roof.

They wore pajamas, were wrapped in blankets, and carried cups of Dutch Bros and Starbucks as they gathered to celebrate the beginning of their senior year and the almost end of the soothing summer weather. The Class of 2020-2021, while practicing social distancing and wearing the latest fashion in face masks, gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 4 on the bleachers of the CHS football field to watch their sun rise.
