Editor's Note: The following letter is from Nicki Aaker, Director of Carson City Health and Human Services, addressing concerns about local testing and numbers of COVID-19 cases that was addressed by Carson Now reader, Abby, who explained her own and her husband's situation. Thank you, Abby, for bringing your story to the forefront. Abby’s story was published on CarsonNow Saturday at 9:28 am. As the Director of Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS), I would like to address some of the issues that Abby has brought up.

Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) is reporting two new positive cases of COVID-19 in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. This brings the total number of cases in the Quad-County region to 11.

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the Sheriff's Office has slightly changed the way they perform their duties thanks to the shut down, and they are already seeing a change in calls for emergency services. While there has been an increase in "stress related" calls, intoxication-related calls are down and community members have been taking care of each other, said Furlong.

Sierra Lutheran High School has launched a COVID Care site to assist the community by providing a single source of commonly-searched resources and information on coronavirus topics to one site for ease of access.

The Nevada Department of Corrections announced Thursday that its first confirmed case of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19 is affecting an employee at High Desert State Prison, located north of Las Vegas.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Here is a list of essential community resources around Carson City, along with telephone numbers and website addresses. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many offices are closed. Information resources may best be found on the agencies websites.

While many of Carson City’s local businesses were mandated to shut down to help the rapid spread of COVID-19, some businesses were deemed to be essential under Governor Sisolak’s order; however, even those essential businesses have changed the way they do business to try and alleviate stresses on the health care system.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting two new positive cases of COVID-19 in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. This brings the total number of cases in the Quad-County region to eight.

For people currently enrolled in Medicaid and, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) the Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services is providing some additional relief.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Wednesday morning two new positive cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. This brings the total number of cases in the Quad-County region to six.

With the continuing spread of COVID-19 within the U.S., the healthcare providers of the greater Lake Tahoe, El Dorado Region are working closely with each other and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as California and Nevada health authorities, to care for affected individuals. We are also jointly taking steps to limit person-to-person spread within our communities.

YERINGTON — In response to Gov. Steve Sisolak’s mandate regarding COVID-19, Lyon County offices will be closed to the public beginning March 25, 2020. However, we will continue to serve our communities by telephone, fax and email, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gov. Steve Sisolak made Nevada one of the first states to enter a state of partial lockdown last Tuesday as an emergency step meant to stem the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, enforcing a closure of the state’s casinos and urging other non-essential businesses to close their doors for 30 days.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation (DETR) is requesting those employers who will close before the end of March to submit their first quarter 2020 Employer’s Contributions and Wage Reports as soon as possible. Employers can utilize online services for filing and making payment. The advanced timeline applies only to reporting, with payment of any taxes not due until April 30, 2020.

As of Tuesday morning 9 a.m., there are no additional cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. The total number of cases in the Quad-County region remains at 4.

In response to the COVID-19 in our region and Gov. Steve Sisolak’s declaration of a state of emergency, closure of all non-essential services statewide, and request for all Nevadans to stay home to implement social distancing, the Carson City Justice, Municipal Court has suspended all eviction proceedings until further order of the court.

A weak to moderate storm will bring gusty winds, valley rain and Sierra snow as well as a return to colder temperatures around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe areas through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

CARSON CITY — Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of elders and all community members, on Monday the Nevada Indian Commission announced the postponement of the grand opening of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum, as well as the cancellation of the 2020 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow.

The Nevada Department of Corrections is providing eligible inmates up to two free phone calls per week thanks to a partnership with inmate telephone system vendor Securus.

CARSON CITY — To support the Governor’s directive to “Stay Home for Nevada” the Department of Health and Human Services has consolidated a list of Department services available to support our citizens.

Three were arrested Saturday for suspicion of child neglect and endangerment among other charges after a baby was brought into the hospital emergency room for ingesting methamphetamine, a Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team arrest report states.

The Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program (RSVP) has taken proactive steps and the necessary precautions to respond to the COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) outbreak and support communities across its 15-county service region including Carson City. The most vulnerable among us rely on RSVP’s volunteer services. Given the increased risks for those we serve such as elders, veterans and adults with a disability, RSVP is limiting interaction between its volunteers and clients by shifting programs to meet the emergent needs of care recipients.

This past weekend, Gov. Sisolak and state authorities provided updates and clarifications regarding statewide school closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the top of the list most impacting students and families in Carson City were four points: 1) all testing has been waived, 2) schools will not reopen prior to April 16, 3) all school employees are deemed to be “essential” and 4) the Nevada Department of Education has approved the request for Emergency Program of Distance Education from the Carson City School District.

MINDEN — In response to COVID-19 Douglas County officials continue to work closely with Carson City Health and Human Services and a regional Emergency Operations Center that has been set up in Carson City to ensure compliance with the Governor’s directive while working in partnership to keep Douglas County residents safe.
