President Barack Obama was cheered enthusiastically Wednesday at the 20th Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual gathering of federal and state leaders from California and Nevada who are dedicated to protecting the Sierra's crown jewel.

"I've never been here," President Obama told the crowd Wednesday at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in Stateline. "Its not that I didn't want to come, but nobody invited me."

The President quipped he's sure to return, "though my transportation won't be as nice."

Lake Tahoe was at a crossroads in 1997. The lake’s famous water clarity, once measuring 100 feet, was declining year after year because of stormwater pollution from roads and developed areas and erosion from streams damaged by logging and cattle grazing.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today that Nevada has received $2.1 million in the first phase of a competition to host the Department of Energy’s new Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal laboratory.

The FORGE laboratory, which would be dedicated to research in the next generation of geothermal energy technology, could be located in Fallon, Nev. Subject to any future restrictions in appropriation bills, this laboratory could receive up to $30 million in funding from the Department of Energy and perhaps tens of millions more.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today he will retire from the Senate and will not seek re-election in 2016. The five-term Democrat from Searchlight, Nev., had brushed off questions that he would be leaving the Senate but an exercise-related accident in January appears to have contributed to the decision.

Carson City government officials on Thursday recognized Western Nevada College’s nationally known humanities exhibition on the costs of war, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Thursday with a proclamation of appreciation and honor.

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a Vietnam veteran, has called the exhibit “our community’s gift to the nation.”

A proclamation honoring the creators and contributors of “Always Lost” was presented to Western Nevada College President Chester Burton and Professors Emeritus Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek during the Board of Supervisors meeting.

Nevada will receive more than $2.5 million in federal grant money designated for highway safety programs, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Monday.

The grant money amounts to $2,522,323 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It will be used for programs to reduce deaths and injuries on the highways and roads by focusing on issues such as driver education, impaired driving, pedestrian and bicycle safety, occupant protection, and emergency medical services.

Nevada Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller jointly released a discussion draft Friday of the Nevada Sagebrush Landscape Conservation and Economic Development Act. The proposal would conserve sage-grouse habitat in Nevada while providing economic development opportunities to industries and local governments throughout the state.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid was hospitalized this morning in Washington, D.C., according to spokesman Adam Jentleson.

“Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. Organizers of the 30th annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow to be held in Carson City during the Nevada Day weekend say the event is taking shape and are looking for sponsors and raffle donations to help bring the event to its fullest.

The pow wow began 30 years ago at the Carson Indian Colony. It is and has always been a part of the Nevada Day celebrations, said co-organizer Brandi Colunga.

However, through the years, some of those who participated in organizing it have stepped down. So, along with Martin Montgomery, the two are hoping to continue the tradition.

Statewide, unemployment rate fell from 9.6 percent to 9.5 percent, seasonally adjusted, with 131,400 people looking for work, marking the 29th straight month of private-sector job creation on a year-over-year basis and the lowest number of unemployed since the worst of the recession hit the Silver State beginning in 2008.

UPDATE: A funeral service for Janice R. Ayres, a longtime Carson City resident and champion for the elderly and disabled in Nevada, will be held today, Friday, in Carson City at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Musser and Division streets.

A gathering for family and friends of Ayres will follow at Cafe at Adele's, 1112 North Carson Street.

Ayres was 92 when she died May 27, 2013.

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today on Earth Day announced that USDA Rural Development has approved a loan of $3,002,000 and a grant of $2,312,794 to replace the wastewater treatment plant that serves the Virginia City and Gold Hill communities in Storey County. The existing plant is past its useful life.
