Cheerios are GMO free? It's a good start
Americans have a right to know what’s in their food. We expect to see labels identifying calories, fat and other content when we buy food. So why not identify genetically modified ingredients?
Kudos to General Mills for announcing last week that their most iconic cereal brand, Cheerios, will be GMO free moving forward. Unfortunately, even with General Mills joining the Chipotle and Whole Foods in heeding the will of consumers and limiting GMO ingredients, Americans will still have a nearly impossible time avoiding GMO ingredients: more than 80% of processed foods contain some genetically modified contents.
It’s great to see a huge corporation take this step towards giving consumers the right to choose, but ultimately it won’t be enough. More than 90% of Americans want to see GMO foods labeled and congress needs to start listening. It’s time for Senator Reid to push congress to pass federal GMO labeling legislation.
