CARSON CITY – The days are lengthening, but lawmakers are still finding good reason to be inside the Legislature from dawn till dusk.
This Friday is a deadline for bills to pass out of committee, leaving many legislators scurrying from committee room to committee room to keep their bills alive.

A Carson City man faces seven felony counts of commercial burglary and seven counts of uttering a forged instrument after being arrested for allegedly attempting to cash counterfeit checks at a casino on the account of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club and the Carson Nugget present the Sierra Swing Showcase April 2-3 in the Nugget's upstairs ballroom, 507 N. Carson St., Carson City. Dance contests and workshops for adults and youths are interspersed with open dancing to a variety of DJ music. The Swing Into Spring Formal Dinner Dance and "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contest is Saturday, 6 pm-midnight. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has updated its hours effective April 4, and with the change includes closing the front office on Tuesdays, officials announced in a press statement today.

Front counter services exist for customers to submit permit applications and get project and property information. The updated schedule reflects the Agency's commitment to customer service following a recent reorganization and staff reduction, the statement said.

CARSON CITY – The author of a new analysis of Nevada’s collective bargaining law says the complex rules have worked to the benefit of teachers’ unions rather than students, making reforms essential to improve the state’s public education system.

The 2011 season for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is rolling down the track to opening weekend, May 27 through May 29 in Carson City, according to Convention and Visitors Bureau officials.

Before the official opening weekend, the railroad is offering a sneak peek into the historic route with a special event on Mother’s Day, Sun., May 8.

“I don't set out to offend or shock, but I also don't do anything to avoid it,” a mantra by and for comedian Sarah Silverman who will be performing at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa at Lake Tahoe on Saturday, April 9. The actor/comedian is taking a mid season break from her Comedy Central TV show to get back to her stand-up comedy roots.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is holding a kids camp event throughout the upcoming Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) Elk Camp & Exposition show scheduled for March 3-6 at the Reno / Sparks Convention Center.

As host of the Kid’s Camp, NDOW will feature fly tying demonstrations, wildlife tracking, and an Operation Game Thief display, among many other displays and demonstrations, during the four day event.

A Carson City man, who was being booked into jail on a violation of his probation, faces felony drug charges after allegedly having a controlled substance taped to his penis.

The Carson City School District reports that its schools are open today, Friday, and will operate on a normal schedule.

Tim Crowley, a lobbyist for the mining industry, said he called her this morning to schedule a meeting after she asked in a Tuesday night blog post, “did mining just hit a brick wall?”

Behind him, a Powerpoint presentation displayed tactics for talking to lawmakers about higher education budget cuts.

CARSON CITY – It’s a rare occurrence that a governor calls a federal law “unconstitutional” one minute and advocates implementing that same law a minute later.

But that’s what happened earlier this week when Gov. Brian Sandoval called for Nevada to move forward with creating the Nevada Health Insurance Exchange, one of the mandates under the Obama administration’s 2010 health care bill.

Today, newly elected Congressman Joe Heck introduced legislation to further allocate and expand the availability of hydroelectric power generated at Hoover Dam.
This bill would allocate Hoover power beginning in 2017 for a period of 50 years. Entities receiving power in present-day Schedules A and B still would continue to receive Hoover power.

Plans to install solar panels at five Carson City schools can proceed on schedule, a district court judge ruled today.

Carson City District Court Sr. Judge Deborah Agosti said it was her opinion that the Carson City School District acted within the scope of the law when it came to a joint bid opportunity with the city of Sparks to install the panels.

On Monday the Northern Nevada Building and Construction Trades Council filed a petition in Carson City District Court to stop progress on the nearly $11 million project.

CARSON CITY – Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval today said he is disappointed with an order from a Nuclear Regulatory Commission panel dismissing Nevada’s legal challenges to the high level nuclear waste repository proposed for Yucca Mountain.

CARSON CITY – The panel that oversees Nevada’s public employee retirement system was told today it would cost about $1.2 billion over the next two years to change from the current defined benefit plan to a defined contribution plan for new state and local government workers.

CARSON CITY – A federal appeals court today lifted a stay on cases challenging the U.S. Department of Energy’s authority to withdraw its licensing application for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

A Dayton man faces multiple drug charges and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Ian Miles Lister, 33, was arrested in the 400 block of Saliman Road in Carson City at around 5:30 this morning after an officer spotted his vehicle committing several traffic violations.

Lister provided his license to the officer but was unable to provide proof of insurance or his vehicle registration. Dispatch informed the officer that his license had been revoked, according to the arrest report.
