The weekends seem to start earlier in summertime. Head down to Mills Park for the first of the rat-rods rolling in for this weekend’s Rockabilly Riot and to catch the motorcycle cops running some practice loops around the obstacle course. Seniors can head to the Community Center for vouchers good at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, residency and income restrictions apply. Join Mo’z Motley Blues on the lawn of the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch for a summer twilight concert – bring a chair or blanket, I suggest some bug spray and a picnic, as well.

THURSDAY:

Happy Wednesday, Carson City. The Wild West is still alive and well; the Reno Rodeo and Carnival is going on right now. Snowshoe Thompson comes to life at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch as Steven Hale performs a Chautauqua tonight. Head over to the Carson Mall for their Home and Garden Show. The Greenhouse Garden Center has set up lovely displays and will help you find just the right thing to make your yard a little slice of heaven. Tonight you can choose a jazz jam, karaoke, or trivia to get you over the mid-week hump.

WEDNESDAY:

To borrow a phrase, it takes a village to raise a fair. The Carson City Fair, returning this year after hiatus in 2016, is no exception.

I love the summer solstice - longest day of sunshine all year. Celebrate the first day of summer with a hike up to our waterfalls; the guided Muscle Powered hike this evening will show you the way. Load up the kids and take a short drive to Silver City; all summer they offer educational fun stuff like today's 'mining for chocolate' activity. It's a night of 1000 Dad Jokes at the Brewery Arts Center where funny and punny run smack-dab into silly - laughter is the best family activity.

SILVER CITY — Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has partnered with Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey to organize a free, public program with guest teachers leading fun, hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

What a weekend. With the Stewart Pow Wow and the Carson City Off-Road, the town was packed with visitors and locals enjoying our city. Next weekend comes jam-packed with everything vehicular.

A happy Fathers’ Day to all of you with kids, and all of you making a difference in a kid’s life. Enjoy some family time at the Carson Hot Springs where fathers are swimming free today. Downtown is still hopping with live music, bicycles, and great food. Everyone races for free at the Carson City BMX Olympic Day, just make sure you’ve got long sleeves and leave the flip-flops at home. Whether you prefer indoors, outdoors, adults-only, or family friendly, there is something to enjoy. The Stewart Fathers’ Day Pow Wow and the Carson City Off-Road are the big tickets in town this weekend, complete with some downtown road closures. It's boots and chaps, it's cowboy hats, it's spurs and latigo, it's the ropes and the reins, and the joy and the pain and they call the thing rodeo."

Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has offered free, public programming in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Last week the annual program kicked off with a blues concert in the park, and this Tuesday, June 13 the program continues with science activities led by Jim Barcellos of University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

Lyon County has been notified by the National Weather Service that flows on the Walker River are being forecasted to run higher than what was earlier anticipated, according to county manager Jeff Page.

The Reno Rodeo 100, a multimedia project collecting stories leading up to the 100-year anniversary of the Reno Rodeo, is debuting the first storytelling event this Saturday, May 13 at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City. Tickets are available for the event, which includes short documentary films, audio stories with slides and live storytellers.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Smack dab in the middle of April and the town is officially in its Spring thaw. Easter is on Sunday, so just about anywhere you go you’ll find the Bunny and an egg hunt. To make it easy, I’ve moved all of those events to their own everything Easter list HERE.

The week winds to a close, but the events are all gearing up. Today kicks off the three-day High School Rodeo at the Douglas Fairgrounds, and if all goes well, it should remain dry for our local ropers and riders. Kids will want to test their skill at the ‘Pitch, Hit, Run’ Competition at the Boys and Girls Club. Secret Agents are the topic at the monthly Mike Thompson Lecture at the Plaza Hotel if you’re looking for intrigue.

Bus Stop, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by William Inge is scheduled for one more weekend at the Brewery Arts Center’s MHJ Black Box Theater in Carson City beginning this Friday night.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine while it was here, more rain is on the way. Take those spring-breakers to a movie; Galaxy Theater rewards members can enjoy $6.50 movies all day today. Sip something yummy at the Courtyard by Marriott during their wine tasting and open house. Normally the Carson City Photo Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month, but due to a scheduling conflict, the meeting is tonight. Dues are only $15 a year and you’ll get the chance to enter their monthly competitions: this month the theme is ‘Winter.’

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) began receiving accounts of horses exposed to equine herpes virus type 4 (EHV-4) and Streptococcus equi bacterial infection — also known as strangles or equine distemper — as of Saturday, Feb. 18, NDA public information officer Rebecca Allured said in a press release late Wednesday.

Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Thursday that Valerie Melendez has been named as the new Tribal Economic Development Director and Tonya Champa as the Investor Relations Director.

On Friday, Jan. 13 the members of the Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 hosted a dinner and auction fundraiser for the Douglas and Carson City Rodeo Team. Forty plus people attended the dinner that was served by the Rodeo Team Members.

Cookies with Santa takes place Saturday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Cafe at Adele’s, in what has become one of Carson City’s defining holiday events. All money and gifts collected goes to Ron Wood Family Resource Center for Toys for Tots.

Popular cowboy poets Harold Roy Miller and Tony Argento will offer a “Cowboy Poetry Duet” for the Friday Night Showcase at the Gold Hill Hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill, on Friday, Nov. 18.

Miller and Argento have both performed cowboy poetry throughout the region for many years, and their work covers all aspects of rural life, with more than a touch of humor.

Historic Dayton is the place to be. The Annual Dayton Valley Days and Railroad Days features a chili cook-off, pet parade, pinewood derby race, and much more. Join CASI at Riverview Park for the annual 5K9 walk/run and don’t forget to bring your pooch. The Edible Pedal is one of the most delicious bike rides around with 100, 50, or 10 mile courses. Playing host to The Way It Was Rodeo, Saturday and Sunday, the event marks the return of rodeo on the Comstock for the first time in nearly 20 years.
