Tim Baugh of Bridgeport, California and his publisher, Companion Press of Bozeman, Montana, have received a design award for Spirit of a Hunter, published in June of 2010.

Western Republicans fight Obama wilderness policy

Republican governors and members of Congress vowed Tuesday to fight an Obama administration plan to make millions of acres of undeveloped land in the West eligible for federal wilderness protection. The GOP officials said the plan would circumvent Congress's authority and could be used to declare a vast swath of public land off-limits to oil-and-gas drilling.

Some Idaho hunters who prefer to mount all-terrain vehicles to pursue their big-game quarry are chafing at Department of Fish and Game restrictions on where they can ride.

Under current hunting regulations, the state requires armed hunters who head out onto public land in about a third of Idaho's 99 hunting units to stick to established roads, while keeping away from off-road vehicle or jeep trails and areas that are otherwise open to unarmed recreational ATV riders.

Rep. Heller Urges House To Restore Geothermal Royalties To Local Counties

Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., today urged his colleagues to ensure that any Continuing Resolutions passed by the House include provisions to restore geothermal royalties to local counties.
The Office of Management and Budget has determined that under current funding legislation, local counties can no longer receive their share of geothermal royalties established under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

BLM Christmas tree permits available beginning Nov. 8

Christmas tree cutting permits in select areas of Northern Nevada public lands will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office announced Thursday.

The agency allows Christmas tree sales to thin small trees in overstocked areas. Organizations and individuals are permitted to harvest trees for resale.

Lands bill contains money for Kings Canyon, Carson River Canyon property

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.

Safety urged for hunters as marijuana grows increasingly found on Nevada public lands

After a summer that netted 15,000 marijuana plants on public lands that extended over four Nevada counties, the state's Department of Public Safety urges caution as hunters head for the woods and secluded places this fall.

Marijuana grows and other illegal enterprises are being encountered on public lands with increasing frequency, according to the department.

Carson City BLM office: Statewide public land fire restrictions begin July 16

With hot weather, dry lightening and drought conditions arriving this summer, conditions for explosive brush and forest fires across the Silver State has increased. Because of this, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office has announced plans to begin statewide fire restrictions on public lands beginning Friday, July 16.
