One of the most historic events affecting the American Business Women's Association was the proclamation of Sept. 22 as American Business Women’s Day.

Enacted in 1983 by a joint resolution of Congress and the signature of then President Ronald Reagan, the proclamation recognized all working women.

Summer program advances reading skills for hundreds of Carson City students

When the Carson City School District learned it would receive funding through a competitive grant program authorized by Nevada’s Read by Grade 3 Act, it came up with an innovative summer reading program to help its English Language Learner population. Results from the 16-day program were overwhelmingly positive.

Technology grant helps Carson City middle school teachers prepare for future

It’s not surprising that middle school students are often more fluent in technology than their parents. But now, due to state grant money allocated to Carson and Eagle Valley middle schools, that technological know-how will be guided toward digital education and job readiness as students advance toward graduation.

WNC information director Anne Hansen earns career service NCMPR Petrizzo Award

The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations presented Anne Hansen, of Reno, Nev., the 2016 D. Richard Petrizzo Career Service Award at its annual conference here in March.

Named for a former NCMPR president who helped shape the organization in its early years, the Petrizzo Award honors an NCMPR professional for longtime accomplishments in college marketing and public relations.

UNR selected second time to host prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship

The University of Nevada, Reno is proud to announce that it has again been selected as a partner with the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Carson City School District teacher expertise will be on display at the National Science Teacher Association area conference on science education Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 22- 24, at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

Nevada Health Centers, Carson City School District open new school-based health facility

The Carson City School District and Nevada Health Centers announced that it will open a new school-based health center on Musser Street behind the Professional Development Center, formerly Gleason Elementary School.

To facilitate the opening, there were be a ribbon cutting celebration Thursday with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and officials from the Carson City School District and Nevada Health Centers Tours and refreshments will be provided. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. This center is located at 618 W. Musser Street.

Award-winning Teaching at a Nevada Charter School

Did you know that all Nevada students in grades 6-12 have access to award-winning teaching at Leadership Academy of Nevada (LANV)? On May 5, 2014, the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) recognized Williamsburg Academy with their Platinum Award for Best Practices in Teaching, the most prestigious award they bestow. Williamsburg Academy is an online private-school affiliate of LANV.

Carson City Library to expand to seven days a week

In an effort to better serve its patrons, the Carson City Library will be open seven days a week beginning in June.

“We are truly the only public facility that allows free access to the Internet and computers on Sunday,” said Library Director Sena Loyd. “It helps out families. It helps out those who have several jobs. Job seekers can come in on Sundays. It helps out anyone who may need more flexible hours to come into the library.”

National UTeach program expansion includes UNR

The National Math and Science Initiative announced Tuesday that five research institutions, including the University of Nevada, Reno, have been selected to join a national network of universities in the expansion of the UTeach science, technology, engineering and math teacher preparation program.

Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Ozmens pledge $5 million for UNR entrepreneurship center

University of Nevada, Reno alumni Fatih Ozmen ’81 M.S. and Eren Ozmen ’85 MBA have pledged $5 million to create a new entrepreneurship center in conjunction with the University’s College of Business. To date, this is the largest gift the College of Business has received.

UNR grad schools, programs ranked among the nation’s best

The University of Nevada, Reno had several notable rankings in the annual listing of the nation’s best graduate schools and programs released in March by U.S. News and World Report. Overall, the University achieved an all-time-high with four graduate school and 24 graduate program rankings.

Teacher Professional Development Program

The Foundation for Teaching Economics, through sponsorship from Caesars Entertainment, will host a 3 ½ day professional development program for middle grades and high school teachers from November 2 – 5, 2013 at the Las Vegas Flamingo Hotel.

The institute will focus on environmental issues and will include a full day field trip. No prior experience is needed either in environmental issues or economics in order to attend.

Graduate credit for the Institute is available through the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Western Nevada College Tech Prep Consortium earns National Career Pathways Award

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College’s Tech Prep Consortium has been recognized nationally for its Career Pathways program.

The National Association for Career Pathways Leadership selected WNC for the 2013 Rigorous Programs of Study National Award for exceeding what other states offer students in career and technical programs. The award recognizes the college’s collaboration with industry and hard work by faculty and staff to provide the essential curriculum and instruction in technology-automated systems, construction, machine tool technology and welding.

Carson City School District Searching for Substitute Teachers

The Carson City School District is seeking applicants for substitute teaching positions for the current 2013-2014 school year. Additional substitute teachers are needed to support the implementation of the district’s bold reforms, supported by the highest nationally rated $10 million Race to the Top Grant.

Mary Covington named to Nevada Arts Council post

The Nevada Arts Council has hired Mary Works Covington of Carson City as its community arts development program coordinator. A native Nevadan, Covington grew up in Silver City and has traveled to every corner of the state. Well-versed in the history of Nevada, she has connections with a number of the state's arts and cultural organizations as a consultant, program specialist and artist.
