Mary Covington named to Nevada Arts Council post
The Nevada Arts Council has hired Mary Works Covington of Carson City as its community arts development program coordinator. A native Nevadan, Covington grew up in Silver City and has traveled to every corner of the state. Well-versed in the history of Nevada, she has connections with a number of the state's arts and cultural organizations as a consultant, program specialist and artist.
She has been involved with St. Mary's Art Center and the Brewery Arts Center, and worked with the Nevada Arts Council on special projects over the years. Most recently, she was contracted by the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, where she developed the Merci Train Programming Initiative which included the Gifts of Healing Exhibit, a behind-the scenes-tour, and workshops for docents and the public.
An award-winning independent filmmaker, Covington earned her Bachelor of Arts in Cinema from the University of Southern California. She has worked on more than 30 films, including Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, The English Patient, and Fight Club. As community arts development program coordinator, she will work with local arts agencies across the state to insure that the arts are part of a community's profile and that Nevadans of all ages and abilities have access to a diversity of arts and cultural experiences at the local level. The program also provides grants, workshops and other professional development opportunities for the cultural workforce, manages the Nevada Circuit Riders consultant program, and coordinates the agency's planning process.
The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is the agency charged with ensuring that state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the arts throughout Nevada. In addition to providing hundreds of grants to arts and community-based organizations, schools, artists and local municipalities throughout the state, the Arts Council coordinates a variety of statewide programs and activities such as the annual Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high-school aged students, traveling exhibits, artist residencies, workshops and cultural assessments.
