Famed country rock band at Silver City, early Carson City history, live comedy and more this weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Combined with live music at Bella Vita Bistro, there’s plenty to do and see around the state capitol. Read on for more.

Events around Carson City for Wednesday, Jan. 8

Heading into midweek, the weather is expected to make an abrupt change with snow showers possible down to the valley floor late Wednesday night into Thursday. Activities include the New Year's Show featured by the Nevada Artists Association, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, the "School of Rock, Senior Years" presentation at the Brewery Arts Center, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at Carson City Library and more.

Events around Carson City for Tuesday, Jan. 7

Going into Tuesday around the capital city we'll see partly sunny skies with highs in the low 50s. There's a slight chance of snow showers later in the evening but nothing significant. Activities around town include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center, exhibits, showings, Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents "Captain Blood" at the BAC Performance Hall, dance and exercise classes at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

With almost 15 percent of the population of Carson City being at least 65 years of age or older, the Brewery Arts Center announces its newest project geared towards that sector, School of Rock: Senior Years.

This exciting new program will begin in January of 2020 and BAC will train, house and facilitate a choir who will learn and perform rock, pop, hip-hop and surf music comprised entirely of people over the age of 65. The choir will meet in our beautiful Grand Ballroom under the direction of James Rossi.

Carson Mall to host Bingo night to benefit Pop Warner Cheer Squad

Carson Mall will be sponsoring a Family BINGO night for the pop-warner cheer squad to go to Nationals! The event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be able to be purchased. Prizes include gift cards, gift baskets and more.

Happenings around the Carson City region for New Year's Eve, Dec. 31

Heading into last day of 2019, we're looking at partly sunny skies with a high around 50 and low around 30. Activities around the capital city region are lined up through the day and evening. Enjoy and celebrate as we prepare to toast a welcome to 2020. Also do consider a designated driver, cab ride, Lyft or Uber to be on the safe side for your ride home if out celebrating. Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will feature Nevada historian CW Bayer, who will talk about his new book “Reno’s Jazz Hysteria — cabaret and ballroom.” Bayer's meticulous research revealed that the origins of Nevada’s “sin industry” were rooted in Reno's scandalous “jazz hysteria,” a pop culture sensation that swept the nation beginning in the 1920s.

It’s going to get hot again today with a high of 93, but don’t worry, as we get out further into the week the weather will turn more autumnal with highs in the 70s. It could be the last hot day for a while, at least until a freak 90s+ hot day in November followed by a week long blizzard, so enjoy it while it’s here!

Letter to the Editor: Mom and Pop's owners speak out regarding gazebo

Dear Editor,

As the owners of Mom and Pop’s Diner for the past twenty years, we have had our ups and downs, as any business does. We have been very lucky to have such a great customer base, and friends. We want to tell all the individuals who have given their moral support that it means so much to Jamesa and myself.

Because the Judge’s verdict has created so much of a stir, it has been better then any kind of advertising money could buy. Everywhere we go, somebody says that this is just wrong, and tells us that it is obvious that it is personally against us.

Carson City District Court rules diner must tear down gazebo on McFadden Plaza

Doug Cramer, the owner of Carson City Mom and Pop’s Diner, has been fighting with the city for two years to keep his gazebo which provides shade for his outdoor patio seating in McFadden’s Plaza.

The Carson City Justice Court originally ruled earlier this year that because Cramer did not have the specific permit needed for the gazebo, and because the gazebo is in the public’s right-of-way, he would need to take it down.
