WNC Baseball: Bennett’s dramatic homer lifts Wildcats past Coyotes

Western Nevada College freshman outfielder Jake Bennett couldn’t have dreamed for a better situation to step to the plate in the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon.

With the Wildcats trailing rival College of Southern Nevada 3-2 and Joey Crunkilton on first base with one out, Bennett launched the first pitch from Josh Nuernberg over the right-field fence for a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory for WNC at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Event Date:
September 7, 2013 - 11:00am

For the first time in program history, the Western Nevada College baseball team is going to take a crack at beating a team made up of successful Wildcats from the past.

Coach D.J. Whittemore has scheduled the first Wildcat Alumni Game for 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. Fans are invited to watch the nine-inning game for free.

Seven players from WNC’s three National Junior College Athletic Association World Series teams have agreed to participate in the matchup and, so far, Wildcats from seven of Whittemore’s eight previous clubs will participate.

WNC Softball: Darby Equals Home Run Record; Lostra, Beck and Bats Propel Wildcats

Western Nevada College found a cure over the weekend for its recent Scenic West Athletic Conference softball losing streak: the power hitting of Sydney Darby and long pitching stints by Ali Lostra and Carlee Beck.

Darby equaled a program record with her 15th and 16th homers of the season, while Lostra and Beck each tossed a complete game as the Wildcats won three of four games from Colorado Northwestern in Rangely, Colo.

In the four tight games with the Spartans, the Wildcats came through with clutch hits, solid defense and lengthy outings from their pitchers.

#8 WNC Baseball Heads to Arizona To Take On #2 Central Arizona

Two Top-10 nationally ranked teams will face-off this weekend in sunny Arizona. #2 Central Arizona College and #8 Western Nevada College will play four games starting this Friday in Arizona. Last year at this time, both teams faced off in Las Vegas and WNC took three out of the four games. Central Arizona was ranked #1 at the time. The Wildcats also eliminated CAC from the playoffs last season by beating them 9-3 in Salt Lake City, UT during the Western District Tournament.

Carson High School Bowling Looks To Get Back To Championship Form

The Carson High School Bowling Team fell off of its pedestal last year for the first time in 12 years. The team, which have been champions every year since its inception in 2000-2001, lost by one pin to the Reed High School Bowling Team in early 2012.

Now, coaches Vern Barnes, Kevin Costa, and David Lethcoe are looking to get the team back up on that championship track. The Carson team has a great mixture of veterans and new faces on the roster to steer this team back into the winners circle.

Graham Blog: MLB Playoffs On the Right Track but Needs Fixing

Event Date:
October 24, 2012 (All day)

Major League Baseball revealed a new playoff format this year by adding an additional team to the wild card mix. It has some potential in my mind after being extremely skeptical about it.

Before this year, only one team won a wild card spot in both the American and National Leagues and they went straight into the Division Series. This year the playoff format allowed one additional team in each league to play for the wild card spot in the division series.

Football makes it to Regionals

The feelings in the stands and on the field were mutual in the last quarter of the game as the score ended 49-0 with Reed winning. The loss may have felt worse because the Senators had an almost perfect season, making it to the Northern 4A Regional Championship of the playoffs. The look on the Carson senior boys said it all as they walked off the field for the last time. The Carson crowd surrounded the exit off the field clapping for the boys’ season.

ACES WIN: 7-4 over RiverCats in first ever playoff game at Aces Ballpark

RENO- The first ever playoff game at Aces Ballpark started out with a somber feel as the Aces observed a moment of silence and the American Flag flew at half-staff for the victims of the IHOP shooting that happened on Tuesday morning in Carson City.

The feel quickly turned to excitement as the Aces took the field ready to take on the Sacramento RiverCats in the first round of the Pacific Coast League Playoffs.

Sacramento and Reno both threw their best arms to start the playoffs: LHP Zach Kroenke 10-3, 5.89 ERA for Reno and RHP Graham Godfrey 14-3, 2.68 ERA for Sacramento.

Aces win 4-3 against Grizzlies

RENO- The Aces looked to rebound against the Grizzlies on Wednesday night after losing the previous night 5-2. They looked to their RHP Zach Kroenke and a better offensive night to get them back on track.

Kroenke delivered with a solid outing going 6 innings giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, with 3 strikeouts on 2 walks. He left the game with a 4-2 lead and in line for his tenth win of the year.

PLAYOFF BOUND!: Reno Aces defeat Fresno Grizzlies 5-2

RENO- Aces are one win away from punching their first ticket ever into the Pacific Coast League Playoffs. The Fresno Grizzlies come into town for a four game series. With Reno having a seven game lead over second place Tacoma and only eight games left to play, the Aces have all but wrapped up their spot in the playoffs. All it would take is an Aces win or a Tacoma loss.

Well, it happened, the Aces beat the Grizzles 5-2 on Monday night for their first ever playoff berth.

Showdown in Reno: Aces and Rainiers fight for division/playoffs

RENO- Aces Ballpark a beautiful sight for downtown Reno was full of electricity on Saturday night as the Tacoma Rainiers rolled into town for the most important season series for the two teams. The Aces lead the Rainiers by five and a half games in the Pacific North Division as they start the four game series against the Rainiers.

The 'Voice of the Aces' Ryan Radtke started out his broadcast by saying the emotions of the two teams would be at an all-time high knowing what this series means for the both of them.

Senators finish third, look to build on momentum for next year

RENO — Now that the Carson High softball team has come close to doing something really special, CHS coach Scott Vickrey wants his squad to build on its momentum for possibly even a better finish next year.

Carson's season came to an end on Saturday at Bishop Manogue in the Northern 4A playoffs as the Senators were eliminated by Damonte Ranch 11-1 in five innings. But Carson's third place finish at zone should serve as a springboard for his young team, Vickrey said, which is losing just three seniors in Daria Leid, Megan Hein and Natalie Morrow.
