February sounds so much closer to spring than January did. As the week comes to a close and the month just begins we welcome several new art exhibits around town. The Carson Visitor Center hosts the Great Basin Native Artists, Western Nevada College students are the talent at the BRIC, and Capital City Arts Initiative features Gil Martin in the Courthouse Gallery. Tonight, join June and the gang at Comma Coffee for their first Wednesday Backseat Gallery reception for this month’s artist.

This month, I’ve been writing along a general theme. Have you noticed yet? You are not alone! This week, I am posting on a Tuesday because life was preparing me to write this column. I had a day of complete and total entrepreneurial stress.

This year’s Winterfest theme is hanging out with Harry Potter, and the plan is to turn CHS into Hogwarts with teachers creating a Hogwarts’ themed door followed by a door decorating contest.

The Dayton Chili Cookers are again partnering with Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry for a big chili cookoff, Superbowl party, silent auction,and raffle to benefit the Pantry.

The event begins at noon on Sunday, February 5th at the Dayton Valley Golf Course and Grill. Judging begins at 1 p.m.

Wednesday has arrived and the rain lingers, so you may as well grab an umbrella and go do something fun. Get a bite to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings where officers and athletes are teaming up for the Special Olympics Tip-a-Cop fundraiser. Take your cowboy boots over to the Eleventh Frame Bar in Carson Lanes for some country line and partner dancing. The Shipleys take the stage at Living the Good Life for this week’s Jazz Jam. Show off your smarts at Westside Pour House: Geeks Who Drink trivia starts at 7p.m.

I know it's hard to think about summer whilst scraping ice off your windshield, but the Community Discount Registration Event for Epic Rides at the Firkin and Fox will have you blissfully dreaming of bike rides in June. It's family fun at the Carson Library's Movie Night: bring the kids down for Finding Dory. Jazz it up with the Shipleys at Living the Good Life. Digital artists, or aspiring ones, will find camaraderie at Wired Wednesday. This month's meeting at Paradise Salon Spa Wellness will cover the upcoming City Wide Film-making Competition.

It’s a great time to be a business student at Western Nevada College. Changes to WNC’s Business program are providing students with important community contacts, real-world training, marketable skills, online course offerings and the opportunity to transfer to a four-year business program as a junior.

Get over the mid-week hump with a visit to one of Carson City’s art exhibits. There’s nothing like a little beauty to make your day. Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

Youth who are planning New Year’s Eve parties this year are being asked to extend an unusual invitation — to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Working with the Carson City School District and Partnership Carson City, the sheriff’s office is promoting a safe a sober New Year’s Eve for the youth by encouraging school resource officers to monitor parties.

Raynna Jackson began helping with Toys for Tots at the Ron Wood center before Thanksgiving in order to fulfill her CHS Senior Project graduation requirement; she decided to help give underprivileged children a Merry Christmas.

She started by putting boxes at CHS and her mother’s place of employment, Natel Company. Toys for Tots serves more than 2,000 Carson City area kids every Christmas, and Raynna took this personally; she wanted to help bring in even more gifts. Raynna ultimately facilitated the gathering of 2 large boxes of toys.

The winter solstice is today: the shortest day and longest night of the year. I’m always happy to hear that because it means longer days are on their way. The holiday frenzy continues, so don’t miss out on those pictures with Santa. Red’s Old 395 will send you off with a complementary 4”x6” photo, and Santa’s Village at the Carson Mall is open all day. 75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

Beam me up, Scotty. Better yet, beam me over to the Carson Library for movie night with Star Trek Beyond. This Wednesday has some fun times to be had. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is on the big screen at Fandango’s Galaxy Theater. A Jazz Jam will get you groovin’ at Living the Good Life. Wired Wednesday, a collective of digital artists, invites you to join them at their monthly meeting tonight. And the ice rink is waiting for your skates to hit the ice. This Saturday, Nov. 19 from 5 PM to 9 PM Team Hope will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Relay for Life of Carson City/Douglas County at Pizza Factory in Minden. Pizza Factory will donate a portion of the proceeds from the evening to the Relay for Life.

Feeling nostalgic? The 20th Anniversary of Space Jam is playing at the Galaxy Theater in case you need a fix of the 90s. Capital City Arts Initiative proudly presents some new art in the Sierra Room of the Community Center. You’ll be able to check out ‘Glyphs and Houses’, a solo exhibition by Amelia Currier during public meetings and on Friday afternoons. The Adams Hub is a great resource for entrepreneurs and small business owners: today’s Entrepreneur Assembly is all about getting you started and on your way.

On Thursday, Nov. 10 the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducted an alcohol compliance check, using minors as decoys. The minors were sent into local businesses and they attempted to purchase alcohol with only possession of Carson High School identification cards.

A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday afternoon for suspicion of battery on a police officer, a gross misdemeanor, and lesser charges of obstructing and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
