February sounds so much closer to spring than January did. As the week comes to a close and the month just begins we welcome several new art exhibits around town. The Carson Visitor Center hosts the Great Basin Native Artists, Western Nevada College students are the talent at the BRIC, and Capital City Arts Initiative features Gil Martin in the Courthouse Gallery. Tonight, join June and the gang at Comma Coffee for their first Wednesday Backseat Gallery reception for this month’s artist.

Dayton Valley Chili Cookoff and Superbowl Party Benefits Food Pantry

The Dayton Chili Cookers are again partnering with Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry for a big chili cookoff, Superbowl party, silent auction,and raffle to benefit the Pantry.

I know it's hard to think about summer whilst scraping ice off your windshield, but the Community Discount Registration Event for Epic Rides at the Firkin and Fox will have you blissfully dreaming of bike rides in June. It's family fun at the Carson Library's Movie Night: bring the kids down for Finding Dory. Jazz it up with the Shipleys at Living the Good Life. Digital artists, or aspiring ones, will find camaraderie at Wired Wednesday. This month's meeting at Paradise Salon Spa Wellness will cover the upcoming City Wide Film-making Competition.

Get over the mid-week hump with a visit to one of Carson City’s art exhibits. There’s nothing like a little beauty to make your day. Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

Partnership Carson City, sheriff's office to provide pizza for New Year's Eve youth gatherings

Youth who are planning New Year’s Eve parties this year are being asked to extend an unusual invitation — to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Working with the Carson City School District and Partnership Carson City, the sheriff’s office is promoting a safe a sober New Year’s Eve for the youth by encouraging school resource officers to monitor parties.

Senator Square: Carson High senior projects are more than a graduation requirement

Raynna Jackson began helping with Toys for Tots at the Ron Wood center before Thanksgiving in order to fulfill her CHS Senior Project graduation requirement; she decided to help give underprivileged children a Merry Christmas.

She started by putting boxes at CHS and her mother’s place of employment, Natel Company. Toys for Tots serves more than 2,000 Carson City area kids every Christmas, and Raynna took this personally; she wanted to help bring in even more gifts. Raynna ultimately facilitated the gathering of 2 large boxes of toys.

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

Ten businesses pass, two fail Carson City Sheriff's Office alcohol compliance check

On Thursday, Nov. 10 the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducted an alcohol compliance check, using minors as decoys. The minors were sent into local businesses and they attempted to purchase alcohol with only possession of Carson High School identification cards.

Carson City arrests: Man jailed for battery on an officer, obstructing

A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday afternoon for suspicion of battery on a police officer, a gross misdemeanor, and lesser charges of obstructing and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
