Carson City School District enters into performance compact with state

Carson City School District is among four districts in the state that have entered into student performance compacts with the Nevada Department of Education and will be able to tap into federal Title I funds, officials announced Tuesday.

Students from Pioneer High School in Carson City traveled to RockSport, an indoor rock climbing gym in Reno to practice skills beyond the classroom. It was a partnership established five years ago to assist PHS students with physical education options and provide motivational events to increase attendance and academic achievement.

John Corbitt, a Pioneer High School teacher, and his math students applied for a grant with Samsung during the first semester of this school year. The school was recently notified that their application was one of the five school finalists in the State of Nevada.

Pioneer High School Ski Trip, a Huge Success!

The students of Pioneer High School all succeeded in improving their skiing skills and working together so that every one was helped up and dusted off after their falls. As a team we accomplished much, as individuals students learned that anything worth doing, will not be that easy but that is indeed, the price of freedom!

This can be applied to every assignment in every class back at school.

Julia plans to enter the Health Information Management workforce as a foundation to further her education and career path in the Health Care Industry. Julia’s empathy and willingness to help others makes her a perfect fit for this program and this career path.

Carson Online education program helps Carson City students graduate

Carson Online, the Carson City School District’s online education program, was piloted at Pioneer High School in 2009. It has become a very successful online credit option for students that has helped change culture, provide technological support and has contributed to raising the graduation rate in the district.

The Carson City Fire Department was called to a structure fire that broke out Monday night in a portable classroom at Pioneer High School at 202 Corbett Street.

Mongoose Bikes Partners with Pioneer High School

Mongoose bikes is helping support the Pioneer High School transition program. The transition program at the Carson City high school helps students into post higher education and career paths. Mongoose is providing bikes, helmets, and all the essentials to maintain a bike. Students will learn bike safety and how to complete basic bike maintenance.

PHS 'Pioneers' Yoga in School

Pioneer High School started the district’s first yoga class for PE and elective credit five years ago and the class has gained popularity throughout the years.

PHS Speech and Debate Team Represents Carson City School District

The first speech and debate tournament of the year is always an exciting and nerve-wrecking time. We started out the school year with some amazing recruitment efforts on the part of the few returning underclassmen we had recommit to compete this year.

With our school’s annual overnight trip to Rock Creek and the first weeks of school, few competitors felt confident enough with the practice time put in to be able to successfully compete at the first tournament but we did have a small team of three ready and anxious to present to pieces for judgement.

PHS Students Striving for a Better Future

On Wednesday night, Dec. 7, students involved in the JAG program at Pioneer High School participated in their annual Installation and Initiation ceremony.

Friends and family joined together in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff’s Office to celebrate their involvement in the program. More than 80 people were in attendance. Principal of Pioneer, Mr. Zona, Superintendent Mr. Stokes, and Sheriff Ken Furlong were some of the most noticeable witnesses.

Pioneer High School is fortunate to have hired another caring and talented individual to help maintain a safe learning environment for students. Danielle Langum, the newest Panther staff member, was hired as the school’s Safe School Advocate.

An Early Graduate at Pioneer High School

Brooke Morris, a Carson Online and Pioneer High School student, is graduating early due to her ability to earn credits faster at PHS and Carson Online. At Pioneer, students can earn a minimum of 9 credits per year on the campus or they can also explore part/full time online options.

Pioneer High School Students Prepare for ACT

Juniors in the state of Nevada must take the ACT tests as one of the requirements to graduate from high school. The tests consist of math, reading writing and science.

Pioneer High School Outreach Teaches Empathy

An active partnership with the Eagle Valley Children’s Home in North Carson City is helping the student leadership class at Pioneer High School learn about the challenges of living with disabilities. In fact, a recent visit motivated these local teens to get more involved to better understand the trials and difficulties people with severe disabilities go through on a daily basis.
