Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by, including the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, Carson City Library’s End of Summer Learning Challenge, history talks at Mormon Station Park, train rides in Virginia City, a sushi cooking class at Sierra Chef on Sunday and more!

This Friday and Saturday night will feature the hilarious comedy stylings of veteran performer Rodney Norman at the Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget.

Rodney was the winner of the Rhode Island Comedy Festival and was also featured in the Boston Comedy Festival. Rodney is a former Marine with a BS degree in Philosophy. He’s been in the comedy business for 20 years and we are happy to have him on our stage.

The Brewery Arts Center presents Grammy winners Flor De Toloache this Saturday, August 3 as part of the Levitt AMP Carson City free music series on The Change Companies stage! With only 4 concerts left in the season, grab your family, friends and neighbors and get ready to head on down to Carson City and Brewery Arts Center’s newest community treasure.

Feedback from the community will play an integral role in the selection of the Carson City Library’s new director.

“Trustees will be using the interviews and the community input from the meet and greet to select the library director during the May 30 meeting,” said Interim Director Diane Baker. “We appreciate all the input we’ve received from everyone involved.”

More than a dozen community members participated in Friday’s meet and greet, where they asked questions of the three finalists vying for the director position.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. And now with valley rain, wind and Sierra snow on the way, we tip our hat to one Carson Now reader, LaNair, who pledged he wouldn't turn on their heater these next few days because, well, it is May after all. Summer is a time for ice cream, bike rides, carnivals, and of course, swimming. However, there is a shortage of lifeguards nationwide so extreme that pool programs are in jeopardy of shutting down.

“We are a part of the aquatic community that is suffering right now,” said Mike Freeman, Recreation Program Manager at the Carson City Aquatics Center.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care invites the community to attend a free discussion on Thursday, February 28 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., led by internationally recognized memory care expert David Troxel, MPH, who will discuss the importance of engagement and activity for brain health as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease.

Carson City Soroptimist will honor five Girls of the Month during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, noon until 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

This meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. There is no charge to attend, however a plated lunch with choice of entrees, selected in advance, is available for $16. Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery will return to Carson City and South Lake Tahoe this month as part of their two-year tour of the United States.

During their Carson City visit, from Jan. 15-20, the monks will construct a Manjushri, also known as Buddha of Wisdom Sand Mandala.

Tickets are on sale for the Carson Rotary Club’s Mardi Gras Celebration. The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. inside the Casino Fandango’s Grand Ballroom.

The Nevada Arts Council will host a free reception and artist talk with Las Vegas artist Donald Corpier Starr on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

RENO — Lithium Nevada Corporation has made a gift of $31,500 in support of establishing the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources’ Great Basin Sagebrush Restoration project. Home to many iconic species found in the West, the sagebrush ecosystems in the United States have contracted to about 56 percent of their historical range due to land degradation, especially from wildfire and invasive species propagation.
