Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

Carson City Sheriff's Office held a ceremony Thursday in which a law enforcement officer with the agency was promoted to sergeant, two were sworn as deputies and one sworn as a reserve deputy.

The Ormsby Room at the Carson City Sheriff's Office was a full house as Carson City sheriff's law enforcement officer TJ Boggan, who has been with the sheriff's office since October 2006, was promoted to sergeant. For the past 2 years Boggan has been assigned to the Northern Nevada FBI Safe Streets Task Force.

Barbara Joy Mott was born to Frank and Ruby Clair in La Junta, Colorado on Oct. 3, 1932. She was Frank and Ruby's second child and only daughter. Her father was a blacksmith and metal worker but passed away when Joy was only ten years old.

After Frank's death the family made its living by picking fruit in California such as peaches, almonds, grapefruit, plums and sometimes cotton. Barbara always went by her middle name Joy and said that she didn't know that her first name was Barbara until she was in the fifth grade.

Counting down the hours until the Nevada Day weekend celebration begins, we're heading into Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 with sunny skies in the forecast through Sunday. Thursday opens the first of the four-day annual RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park with $1 ride family night hosted by Carson City Toyota. Other activities around the capital city include a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, art showings, library activities, a gold and silver rush presentation at the Nevada State Museum and more.

The Silver State celebrates its birthday this week in Carson City and will put on a statehood celebration like no other as Nevada Day comes into full swing, featuring the annual parade down Carson Street on Saturday, a carnival at Mills Park, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, activities for adults and kids, contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit every wild hair.

Dr. Samir Pancholi of Las Vegas is pleased to announce that the second annual Pancholi Scholarship for Nevada Educators is now accepting applications. The $2,000 scholarship was developed to help support our next generation of teachers in an effort to help encourage educators to pursue their passion.

We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. This year, the fan-favorite Cecil the Serpent of Walker Lake will be returning to Carson City for the first time in decades to participate in the Nevada Day parade this Saturday.

New coats and jackets are in needed and are being collected for the McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program run through the Carson City School District.

Going into Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 more sunny skies and warm fall temperatures will continue to shine on the capital city as we prepare for the Nevada Day weekend. Ahead Tuesday include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a "haunted" cemetery tour at Lone Mountain, a business networking meeting at Casino Fandango and the Fat Tuesday business networking group at Carson Nugget, archery at Centennial Park and more. RENO — Wilber Martinez-Guzman appeared in a Reno courtroom Monday, October 21, 2019 as his attorneys argued for a delay in the case.
Martinez-Guzman is accused of killing a Reno couple, Jerry and Sherri David, and Sophia Renken and Connie Koontz in their Gardnerville homes within a period of 10 days in early January 2019.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun closing recreational facilities around the Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and National Forest roads.

A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday in the 2700 block of Menlo Drive for suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy said.

Mechatronics training in the Automation and Industrial Technology Center at Western Nevada College went international last week. Nevada System of Higher Education’s new and unique partnership with higher education institutions in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, began in earnest this week as a group of instructors visit WNC to participate in the accelerated Siemens Mechatronics certification program.

While volunteers of the Carson City Sheriff’s Search and Rescue unit are available 24-hours a day to help those in need, this Wednesday evening Firehouse Subs will be making itself available to assist the Search and Rescue unit with a fundraiser.

Call for Artists for the Carson Valley Art Association upcoming Annual Scholarship Art Show, Nevada Day weekend, October 25-27 at the CVIC Hall, 1502 Esmeralda Ave., Minden.

Artists from Nevada, adjoining California counties and high school students are encouraged to participate.

Sunday will bring cool temperatures and some sunshine with daytime highs in the mid 60s around the capital city region. Lined up today are fall train rides in Carson City and Virginia City, a women veteran's support group meeting, and a a discussion with survivors, family and doctors about metastatic breast cancer. Hello fellow anglers. The season is changing just like the leaves in Alpine County. Renee and I took a drive up to Apple Hill located in Placerville, Calif., last week and were planning on doing some fishing in the higher lakes.

DAYTON, Nev. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties is partnering with Lyon County Sheriff’s Department and the DEA to sponsor a "Prescription Drug Disposal” at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An all-ages bingo fundraiser will be held Saturday, October 19 at the Carson Mall beginning at 4:45 p.m. to raise money for the Billow Family, to help with their children’s medical conditions.

Sierra Nevada Journeys and the Nature Conservancy in Nevada will host a Family STEM Night and Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 23 at River Fork Ranch Preserve, 381 Genoa Lane, Minden, Nev.

The event will provide a fun and interactive experience for all ages where participants can enjoy hands-on science through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities, and learn more about Sierra Nevada Journeys STEM nights and River Fork Ranch Preserve.

This afternoon the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club posted the following message for its membership and the shooting public regarding the end of its role assisting the city in operating the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range:

The "use agreement" between the city and the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will expire on October 18th and the city has declined to renew it. Consequently, the club will no longer provide Range Safety Officers or assist in operating the range as of this Friday.
