Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. An elderly driver involved in a single vehicle crash that happened New Year's Eve in Genoa died Monday at a local area hospital, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Hand-made noisemakers, dancing, music and a short parade will all help usher in The Year of the Rat in Carson City this Saturday, Jan. 25.

The second week of January has blown in quite fiercely, with a High Wind Warning to last through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Activities around the capital city include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the library, a brown bag luncheon featuring famed environmental writer Michael Branch at the Nevada State Library and Archives, the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a meeting of the Carson City School Board, live cool jazz at Living the Good Life and more.

With 2019 now at a close and all of the final reports in for the period all the way through the New Year Eve celebrations, it’s time for a summary look back for everyone to see.

Swing into the New Year with the Mile High Jazz Band on Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.

The Carson High School Blue Thunder Marching Band has been selected to participate in the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco for the third year in a row.

The Human Bean coffee franchise opened their drive-thru coffee stand in Ashland, Oregon in 1998. Since then, they’ve opened nearly 100 further locations in ten states, and Carson City has now received their own.

Heading into Thursday, today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Across the country on January 9 each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. Thank you law enforcement. In other happenings, events are lined up throughout the day including art showings, an open invitation to a meeting of the Carson City Natives and Newcomers Club, A Prison Hill open space planning open house hosted by Parks and Rec, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, the Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

A new Salon has opened for the start of the new decade at the corner of 5th Street and S. Carson Street, across from the Ormsby House.

Owner Cindi Miller moved to Carson City twelve years ago, and always had her eyes set on becoming a Salon owner. Now, she’s opened Pure Platinum Salon and Spa, located at 501 S. Carson St.

A Carson City man was arrested early Wednesday morning for suspicion of felony domestic battery with prior conviction and other alleged offenses, a sheriff's office arrest report states.

CARSON CITY — Royce Ponton gave birth to a new baby boy, Leviathan Wayne Ponton at 12:53 AM on Jan. 1, the first baby of 2020 at Carson Tahoe; he also achieved the title of first Northern Nevada baby born in 2020! But, unbeknownst to Royce, she had even more to celebrate!

Today, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 is the beginning of a new year, a new decade and also a new set of laws. More than 70 laws enacted by the Nevada Legislature last year take effect either in whole or in part today.

They include several major health care initiatives — including a ban on surprise emergency room bills, a tax on vaping products and a requirement that hospitals use patients’ preferred names and pronouns — as well as laws that will benefit employees, including paid sick leave.

The Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority's, "Visit Carson City," has launched a rebrand of the website and logo for the New Year.

Early New Year's morning in Carson City circa 1999-2000, a mylar balloon was launched shortly after midnight, knocking out power to thousands of electricity customers around town. The power outage was confusing to many as the nation and world were, at the time, concerned about Y2K issues. The incident generated plenty of conversation around the water cooler during the days that followed.

Heading into last day of 2019, we're looking at partly sunny skies with a high around 50 and low around 30. Activities around the capital city region are lined up through the day and evening. CARSON CITY — As northern Nevada ushers in a new year, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be rolling out new sign and signal systems as part of transportation advances to help keep drivers safer in 2020.

Ring in the New Year with a great read and be entered to win prizes at the same time. While reading is usually its own reward, patrons who take part in the Carson City Library's Winter Reading Challenge will also be earning raffle tickets as they lose themselves in a good book or peruse the daily paper.

As we head into the final Monday of 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of light snow in the morning as a weak weather system brushes the region. Events around the Carson City area include a driver's education class offered through Western Nevada College Continuing Education, a luncheon featuring Patricia Ackerman, a Democratic primary candidate for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, art activities and more.
