CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources director Bradley Crowell announced Wednesday the appointment of Robert “Bob” Mergell to serve as the new Administrator for the Nevada Division of State Parks.

The National Weather Service says there's a 30 percent chance today and 70 percent chance Wednesday. Good news for our rather parched city. Among today's featured events are a morning walk and evening hike, a Pony Express celebration in Silver Springs, a viewing of the Hitchcock classic "Rear Window" and more.

Saturday is recognized nationwide as National Ghost Hunting Day as well as Nevada Public Lands Day statewide. Odd as it may seem, the two can be combined at haunts around Nevada.

CARSON CITY — Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day this Saturday, Sept. 29 with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping, Saturday night, and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.

The long awaited Disc Golf course for Carson City has its end in sight, and should be finished by the end of the year if all goes well.

Today brings the second and final volunteer training event at the Nevada State Museum, morning and afternoon hikes and walks, a rally at the capital, a fundraiser at Mills Park, plenty of art exhibits and more.

The Nevada Division of State Parks, within the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is excited to announce that, of approximately 10,000 entries, the No. 1 winning photo of Aspira’s 2018 America State Parks Photo Contest showcases the ever-inspiring Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

This week's hike has CHANGED to the new Clear Creek Trail. Since Nevada State Parks is closing some of the trails for forest management, the original trail advertised, Tahoe Rim Trail Spooner Summit-North will closed.

The meeting place has not changed. We will still meet at Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool up to Spooner Summit to park in the south parking lot for the Tahoe Rim Trail.

The Clear Creek Trail begins just east of the bathroom and is accessed via the Forest Service Road just east of the bathroom.

The Thunderbird Lodge is a bizarre piece of Lake Tahoe history, from the early days of the 40s when rich high society types out of San Fransisco came to develop properties and build their lavish summer estates.

The Lodge, however, stands far above the rest, due to its eccentric owner, his bizarre life, and the strange underground labyrinth he built.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of State Parks administers grant funds from the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration. Approximately $1.2 million in funding is available for the 2019 fiscal year. Applications are due by November 9, 2018.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The Marlette Flume Trail will close from Marlette Dam to Tunnel Creek Road for a landslide repair project on Monday, August 27. The Trail will be closed to through traffic on the following dates (out and back traffic will be allowed):

YERINGTON — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced Monday that Nevada’s newest state park, the Walker River State Recreation Area, will officially open to the public at the Pitchfork Ranch on Saturday, Sept. 22.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — New to nature? Curious about camping? Join our park staff for an overnight adventure at Fort Churchill State Historic Park that will have families learning the basics about camping while enjoying the outdoors in a safe and fun environment.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Join a park ranger for a guided hike to the famous Sand Harbor Overlook on the Tahoe Rim Trail. The hike is a four-mile loop and offers breathtaking views of Sand Harbor.

It’s a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of weekend. Add in bands, bikes and bar-be-ques and we’ve got most of this weekend’s list covered. The Carson City Airport is celebrating 90 years at this year’s open house and fly-in. One of the summer’s best events with balloon rides, cool old planes, and much more: you won’t want to miss it. Beat the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; all admission fees have been waived today thanks to Carson City Toyota. Summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center begin tonight with the Original Wailers.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

The Nevada Division of State Parks is excited to encourage Nevada residents to participate in the second annual America’s State Parks 2018 photo contest, sponsored by our partnering agency, the National Association of State Park Directors.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife's annual Free Fishing Day is this Saturday, June 9. Anglers may fish in any public water throughout the Silver State without a fishing license. All limits and other regulations apply.
