Nevada Humanities Announces Nature-Themed Books for 2021 Nevada Reads Program

Nevada Reads will feature two memoirs — Miracle Country: A Memoir by Kendra Atleework, and World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Vlautin is on tour as a featured 2019 Nevada Reads author. Join the author of "Motel Life" and "Don’t Skip Out on Me" for readings and discussions on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, noon to 1 p.m. at the Nevada State Library and Archives building, 100 North Stewart St., Carson City. Nevada Letters About Literature student competition winners named; advance to national competition
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 04/29/2019 - 11:16amNevada Humanities has announced the winners of the statewide Letters About Literature program. 243 students from Nevada submitted entries to the national competition at the Library of Congress, and nine Nevada students placed in the top three of their respective judging categories and will be honored in a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The first place winners in each category will represent Nevada at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

You may as well start looking at that gift list to see who would enjoy something one-of-a-kind and locally crafted. If not for gift giving, these fairs are an excellent way to find fun ways to decorate your home. Other than that, the weekend is kind of quiet, but you'll want take a look at the list and see what catches your fancy.

The cast and crew of the Western Nevada Musical Theater Co. knock it out of the park with this production. Carson High School’s annual Craft Fair begins tonight; a plethora of crafters, artisans, and vendors will be there to help with your holiday gift list. It’s West Coast Swing night at Yaple’s Ballroom, so put on your dance shoes and kick the weekend off right.

“We Are Called to Rise” is told in four distinct voices: An immigrant boy whose family is struggling to assimilate, a middle-aged housewife coping with an imploding marriage and a troubled son, a social worker at home in the darker corners of Las Vegas, and a wounded soldier recovering from an injury he can’t remember getting.

Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 11/07/2013 - 3:21pmNevada Center for the Book and the Carson City Library will present author Tupelo Hassman on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. Hassman’s first novel, "girlchild," is written in a compelling style of short chapters, redacted pages, and gut-wrenching narrative. The Nevada Reads event is sponsored by the Nevada Center for the Book and Nevada Humanities.
Nevada Humanities Scholar Dr. Reginald Stewart will participate in this book discussion, as well. A focus of discussion will be on the eugenics of generational poverty.
