Gov. Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announces that county election officials have begun to mail out 2020 primary election ballots and that voters can expect to receive their ballot in the mail in the next two weeks.

Voters in some counties may even begin to receive their ballots in the mail as early as May 1. Secretary Cegavske previously announced that the 2020 primary election would be a vote-by-mail election due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Assembly Republican Caucus addressed its plan Monday to reopen Nevada, proposing a framework, establishing a regional plan and a bi-partisan task force to advise on a strategy. It calls for Nevada to join the California, Oregon and Washington Western States Pact; establish a regional plan to modify Nevada’s stay at home orders and the caucus wants to immediately establish a curbside model that will allow non-essential retail businesses to open.

Gov. Steve Sisolak is asking state agencies to identify “potential areas for reductions” in their budgets — with up to $687 million in possible cuts over the next two years — as the state deals with an expected financial crunch created by the coronavirus crisis.

“Effective immediately, Assemblyman Jim Wheeler has resigned as Minority Floor Leader due to personal reasons. He nominated Dr. Robin Titus (R-AD 38) to be the new leader and she was unanimously elected by the full Caucus.”

Partnership Carson City is inviting the community to the premiere of “Voices of Opioid Addiction — A Retrospective” on Wednesday afternoon.

“Opioids have become a scourge to Nevada families,” said Samantha Szoyka, training specialist for Partnership Carson City. “We’re hoping this film sheds light on the horrors of this drug and give people — especially young people — a look into the devastation it can cause.”

This is the sixth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real per-capita incomes are lower now than in FY06. The next two analyses reviewed spending on health and social services and on K-12 education, the two largest budget items by far and the only major areas on which spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy.

The 80th session of the Nevada Legislature is underway with over 1,200 bills up for consideration. With so many bills it is nearly impossible to give each one the proper consideration required, as was intended by the founders of our great state. This means we are considering a great number of laws; however, what we should be focusing on is producing well thought out legislation.
