I’ve been a longtime fan of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. This is, up until he moved beyond me into funk and rock, not exactly jazz to my way of thinking. I was still back with his record-selling “King of Blue” CD. Then I saw a listing in Netflix for “Miles Davis: Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue,” and I ordered it. Couldn’t be all bad, I figured.

Attention all poets, musicians, songwriters and comedians: Comma Coffee in Carson City offers a venue for you. Bring your hidden and not-so-transparent talents to open mic night.
Hosted by Jen Scaffidi, open mic at Comma Coffee showcases a variety of talent in a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere. All performers of any persuasion are welcome.

Music fans in Carson City will get a treat Friday night when pop, funk and rock musicians Frobeck take the stage at the Brewery Arts Center.

Four representatives from The Winnemucca Community Garden (WCG) will be the only delegates from the state of Nevada to represent the United States when 5,000 representatives from the worldwide Terra Madre network meet in Turin, Italy this October. This event, in its fourth year, coincides with the international Slow Food Fair.

Thelonious Monk has long been a master of the jazz idiom and the 88 keyes as well as writing some jazz standards that have outlived his death and been recorded and played by hundreds of jazz musicians.

I, for one, always thought of Monk as a dapper, slim esthetic kind of guy, but the DVD "Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser" available from Netflix, shows a different kind of guy: big, hulking, lively, involved in his music and fellow players.

Tahoe Dance Band performs at the Grand Hall on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The 17-piece band plays big band and swing with fox trots, waltzes, tangos, and polkas. Tickets are $15/$12/$5.

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

The Jazz! Carson City concert series continues with a performance by Rick Metz & First Take at Firkin & Fox on the deck, 310 S. Carson Street in Carson City from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. It's an Open Jam Session where musicians sit in. They are Rick Metz, saxes; Latisha Lewis, vocals; Dave Kubin, keyboard; Neil Strocchio, drums.

The Jazz! Carson City series continues with the Ake-Roth-Laurain Trio at the Brewery Arts Center. This unique, original, highly creative, and distinctive internationally known trio of jazz musicians will play at at the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. LAKE TAHOE — Get ready for jazz, Celtic, mystery, comedy, bluegrass, percussion and a whole lot more at the Lake Tahoe Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival. The Festival takes place at the historic Tahoe Tallac site, a 74-acre setting currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a 1800’s favorite getaway for Northern California’s elite members of society.  But you don’t have to be an elite member of society to enjoy the variety of affordable and sometimes even free events at the Valhalla Festival.

JMark Cash presents the Chihuahua Desert Duet, an acoustic duet playing rock, folk, country and traditional Mexican music. The musicians will perform at Sierra Place, 1111 West College Parkway in Carson City. The duo invite anyone stop in, shake a hand or two, kick up a little sawdust and let out a hoot. LAKE TAHOE — Visitors and locals alike can head to the shoreline of the Tallac Historic Site for some of the area’s most unique and diverse entertainment. The Valhalla Arts, Music, and Theatre Festival is bringing down the house with its July line-up and it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

'Montana Skies' is a must-see live concert experience. It is a duo with the full spectrum of an orchestra crossed with the energy of a rock band.
