On Thursday July 11 at 6:30 p.m., the Douglas County Historical Society will be continuing its Heritage Lecture Series with a history presentation titled, “A Sentimental Journey Along Highway 395.”

The presentation will be made by local author, historian and Douglas County Historical Society member David Woodruff.

Nevada Arts Council announces fiscal year 2020 grant recipients

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of more than $1 million in statewide grants to 172 recipients ranging from individual artists to nonprofit organizations and public institutions for the 2020 fiscal year.

Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension leads his popular interactive science activity on Tuesday, July 9 from 10 to noon at the Silver City School House, 385 High Street. The activity is free and all children ages 8-12, with their parents, are invited to attend.

The Carson City Historical Society will host an open house at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Highlights of Carson City history and the families that lived in this historic house are presented on a free, docent led tour of the Foreman-Roberts House. After touring the Museum, enjoy light refreshments in the Carriage and view the informative displays. The museum is located at 1207 N. Carson St.

Stop by the east side of Mills Park on Sunday for the Parks Foundation’s monthly open house at the Wungnema House, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

The Wungnema House is the charming stone cottage located on the east side of Mills Park across from Carson High. It was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons shortly after WWII and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s.

Hands-On Science Activities in Silver City July 2 and July 9; concerts, book signings and more to follow

Silver City, Nevada - Kids ages 8-12 and their parents can don goggles and learn why there's an endothermic reaction between vinegar and baking soda in a bubbling and fun activity on July 2 in Silver City. Participants will use thermometers and observe whether heat is created or extinguished. The experiment will also help them learn about Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Children's Museum Receives Nevada Arts Council Award

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada was recently awarded $3500 by the Nevada Arts Council to produce Story Time, a literary arts program for young children. The Nevada Arts Council's support is critical in attracting support from the greater community because of the extreme vetting process used by the NAC and the prestige that comes with being part of a select group of leading cultural institutions. The award was part of Nevada's commitment to the arts in the region which included the Discovery Museum, Artown, Brewery Arts Center, and the Nevada Museum of Art.

RSVP Program Director to speak at Democratic Luncheon

The Carson City Airport Open House is back this Saturday, and they're bringing more than one kind of wing

Lecture details lives of immigrant Chinese woodcutters

CARSON CITY — Chinese immigrants were abundant in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada in the latter half of the 19th century.

In the 1860s, the first Chinese immigrants found their way to Aurora, Nevada and by the 1870s, they had settled along King Street in Bodie, California, creating a sizeable Chinatown. By the 1880s, they cornered the woodcutting market, providing cordwood and charcoal to neighboring residents, businesses, and ranches.
