Full moon hike, astronomy walk among Washoe Lake State Park events in September

Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City is offering two interpretive programs during the month of September, including a full moon hike and an astronomy program.

Virginia City wild weekends ahead feature Labor Day celebration, camel and ostrich races

Virginia City celebrates the next two weekends with historic proportions including the Great Civil War Days this Saturday through Monday, the annual Labor Day parade and then prepares itself with giddy and up go the following weekend with the 57th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races.

The weekend is quickly approaching, but don’t rush past the fun that Thursday has to offer. Check out the Jazz and Beyond offerings: Carolyn Dolan with members of the Reno Jazz Orchestra at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall or music with the New World Jazz Project on the Adele’s Veranda. Telegraph Square will be abuzz with art and music as the third Community Art Night takes place: bring something non-perishable for the F.I.S.H. food bank and an appetite for food truck offerings.

I am quite fond of Tuesdays. For a weekday, they usually have some great offerings. Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

Night in the County music festival organizers announce additional artists for 2016

Night in the Country will celebrate its 15th year as Nevada's longest-running country music festival with the largest lineup in its history, featuring some of the biggest country artists in the world including headliners Tyler Farr, Chase Rice and Kip Moore. The festival, set for July 21 – 23 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington, has also added Phil Vassar and Josh Abbott Band to the 2016 lineup.

The top three places by category in Carson High School’s annual Reflections Art Contest have been named, and their artwork entered into state competition in Las Vegas, Carson High School Parent Teacher Student Association's Reflections co-Chair LeAnn Saarem said.

Full moon hike at Washoe Lake State Park, history talks at Mormon Station

State parks has a couple of nearby events coming up next week. Washoe Lake State Park will offer up a full moon hike along the Deadman’s Creek Trail. Walkers and hikers will explore the park by the light of the full moon on this moderate, one mile, round-trip hike to the gazebo overlooking Washoe Lake.

Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City will offer two opportunities to learn about past holiday traditions and local history plus a unique full moon hike on Christmas Eve.

Northern Nevada Christmas Past will be a family-friendly, Christmas-themed slide show that covers past holiday traditions combined with local history from Virginia City, Fort Churchill, Buckland Station and other areas of Northern Nevada. Rangers will also discuss origins of holiday traditions, including Santa Claus, candy canes and Christmas trees.
