Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City is offering two interpretive programs during the month of September, including a full moon hike and an astronomy program.

Virginia City celebrates the next two weekends with historic proportions including the Great Civil War Days this Saturday through Monday, the annual Labor Day parade and then prepares itself with giddy and up go the following weekend with the 57th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races.

The weekend is quickly approaching, but don’t rush past the fun that Thursday has to offer. Check out the Jazz and Beyond offerings: Carolyn Dolan with members of the Reno Jazz Orchestra at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall or music with the New World Jazz Project on the Adele’s Veranda. Telegraph Square will be abuzz with art and music as the third Community Art Night takes place: bring something non-perishable for the F.I.S.H. food bank and an appetite for food truck offerings.

I am quite fond of Tuesdays. For a weekday, they usually have some great offerings. Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

TUESDAY:

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. The Senior Follies have taken over the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater. Kids won’t want to miss the Capitol City Triathlon: swim, bike, and run your way to the winner’s circle. Celebrate community at the second annual Sassabration and don't forget your bathing suit: the Carson Hot Springs will be free from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Find a feline friend at the Nevada Humane Society’s free adoption weekend. Keep reading for everything our valley has to offer.

A Reno couple face felony drug charges after officers found methamphetamine inside a purse and stashed in a pill bottle following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Woodside Drive, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

2016 Strawberry Moonrise

The first full moon of June is known as the Strawberry Moon. The fact that it coincides with the summer solstice today is pretty rare indeed: a once in a lifetime occurrence. Enjoy this first day of summer and keep some water handy: things are heating up this week.

The south shore at Lake Tahoe is continuing its revitalization to the tune of $500-plus million with new accommodations, retail space, restaurants, and area attractions that reinforce authentic experiences.

You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. Washoe Lake State Park is hosting a variety of events during the month of April, including a basic astronomy program focusing on year-round (circumpolar) constellations, a wildflower walk, a full moon hike and a guided hike through the sand dunes.

Night in the Country Music Festival has added Craig Morgan and Old Southern Moonshine Revival to the 2016 lineup at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington, July 21–23.

Night in the Country is celebrating its 15th year with the largest lineup in its history, featuring some of the biggest country artists in the world including headliners Tyler Farr, Chase Rice and Kip Moore.

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down Medical Parkway. The annual Eggstravaganza returns to the Carson Tahoe Medical Center this afternoon with fun for kids of all ages. You’ll find Moses parting the Red Sea on the big screen, as The Ten Commandments makes its way to the Galaxy Theater as part of their Classic Movie Series. City Manager, Nick Marano, is the featured speaker at the monthly ‘Soup’s On’ Luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy the evening with a Jazz Jam at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint or karaoke at Crossroads Lounge.

It’s Monday, Carson City, whether you’re ready for it or not. The sunny days ahead are getting longer, and the clear skies tonight should make for a beautiful view of the full moon. Night in the Country will celebrate its 15th year as Nevada's longest-running country music festival with the largest lineup in its history, featuring some of the biggest country artists in the world including headliners Tyler Farr, Chase Rice and Kip Moore. The festival, set for July 21 – 23 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington, has also added Phil Vassar and Josh Abbott Band to the 2016 lineup.

The top three places by category in Carson High School’s annual Reflections Art Contest have been named, and their artwork entered into state competition in Las Vegas, Carson High School Parent Teacher Student Association's Reflections co-Chair LeAnn Saarem said.

State parks has a couple of nearby events coming up next week. Washoe Lake State Park will offer up a full moon hike along the Deadman’s Creek Trail. Walkers and hikers will explore the park by the light of the full moon on this moderate, one mile, round-trip hike to the gazebo overlooking Washoe Lake.

On New Year’s Day, the fourth annual memorial “Walk and Wave” will be held for Ed “The Waver” Carlson, in downtown Reno. Participants will walk and wave to others, as Ed did during his lifetime, through Downtown Reno north along Virginia St. and then east along E. Fourth St.

The gift wrap has been shredded, the eggs nogged, and the carols sung. Now it’s time to show off our great city to your out-of-town visitors. The Nevada State Museum, the twinkling Capitol, and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada are a good place to start.

Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City will offer two opportunities to learn about past holiday traditions and local history plus a unique full moon hike on Christmas Eve.

Northern Nevada Christmas Past will be a family-friendly, Christmas-themed slide show that covers past holiday traditions combined with local history from Virginia City, Fort Churchill, Buckland Station and other areas of Northern Nevada. Rangers will also discuss origins of holiday traditions, including Santa Claus, candy canes and Christmas trees.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas morning is just one month away. First things first, however, is Thanksgiving.
