First Descents is piloting in 2020 a monthly meetups program in northern Nevada. The program will provide 11 life-changing outdoor and outdoor-related adventures this year free of cost to local young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

Carson City Soroptimist will present the Live Your Dream Award, five scholarships, and recognize four Girls of the Month during its January program meeting. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, noon to 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

Heading into midweek, the weather is expected to make an abrupt change with snow showers possible down to the valley floor late Wednesday night into Thursday. Activities include the New Year's Show featured by the Nevada Artists Association, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, the "School of Rock, Senior Years" presentation at the Brewery Arts Center, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at Carson City Library and more.

Carson City's Bleu Cafe closed their restaurant doors in November to focus on catering and parties, but after months of public outcry from Bleu Cafe enthusiasts, Chef Roberta Davies has opened the restaurant and bar for lunch, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The restaurant is popular for their menu that touts cooking "the old fashioned way," with every item made from scratch using real ingredients. When it closed, the public let Davies know just how upset they were.

We celebrate our community for its many, many charitable functions and its generosity in the spirit of Christmas and giving. Heading into Christmas Eve, activities around the capital city are winding down, but the last minute shopping will continue, so prepare for that rush on the roadways and at local stores. It is the last day of the Holiday Craft Show at Carson Mall, so stop on by. There are no planned Muscle Powered fitness events scheduled. Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College is ending 2019 with something new. Observatory Director Thomas Herring will moderate the first “Astronomy Roundtable” on Saturday, Dec 28 at 6:30 p.m.

RENO — Susan Moreno and Peter Williamson have been elected to the board of directors of NCET, a member-supported non-profit that produces educational and networking events to help people explore businesses and technology.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Sierra Lutheran High School English teacher Katie Allin was selected as the Carson City Rotary Club’s Teacher of the Month for December. Allin, who teaches English, has taught for eight years, including three years in Houston, TX. before coming to at Sierra Lutheran in 2014.

The American Citizen Essay winners are in, and they all have one thing in common: cash prizes. The Carson City School District is seeking one (1) more application from a parent to serve as a member on the district’s Family Life Committee. An initial request for four (4) applications was made a month ago in October, and the district was able to appoint three (3) new members of the committee; however, the school district is still needing to fill one more seat.
