Graham's Word: Mike Trout the shining example of what a true MVP should be

I read an interesting article Wednesday written by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. In this article I found the content and its title to not really mesh.

MLB trade deadline is more like Christmas in August

The MLB Trade Deadline has come and gone. For baseball fanatics it is Christmas in August. The baseball world goes into a frenzy with contending clubs trying to out do their closest competitor(s) for a stretch run into the playoffs and what all hope to be eventually a winning combination to the World Series.

For the Bay Area teams it was much of the same as it as been in recent seasons. San Francisco buys, and Oakland sells.
Although, some may say the Giants sold a little bit of their future today to win now and keep with the "even year" theme.

WNC's Peters signs with LA Dodgers, earns All-American honors

As Western Nevada College in Carson City ended its baseball program last month, center fielder DJ Peters finished the season with a flourish.

The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Peters in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft, and by the beginning of the week, he and his representatives had worked out a contract with his favorite childhood team.

DJ Peters broke a number of records for Western Nevada College during his final season for the Wildcats in 2016. He added one more on Friday morning when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the WNC outfielder in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Graham's Word: Stop the Rule Changing Epidemic in Baseball

Now begins the offseason of baseball. Probably just as exciting as the regular season itself. With all of the trades and signings going on it really is Christmas for baseball fans to see what will be in store for baseball in 2016. I am here to talk about the potential rule changes that could be discussed and subsequently changed for the upcoming season.

Graham's Word: 2015 MLB Award Predictions

Now that the regular season is over I can make my opinion heard on the major MLB Awards. Let the debate begin:

Graham's Word: MLB's New Domestic Violence/Child Abuse Policy A Start But Very Weak

Major League Baseball has recently come out with a domestic violence/child abuse policy. While it is a start, the policy is very weak overall. If you read the policy, that fits on one page, you will see that it leaves a lot of doors open and a lot left to be desired. It has no concrete punishments. This policy is basically up to the Commissioner (just like the NFL, and we all know how well that has gone).

U.S. Honor Flag to be presented at funeral for Carson City deputy killed the line of duty

The U.S. Honor Flag will be delivered in tribute to Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell, who died in the line of duty Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015. This American flag has traveled more than 7 million miles since Sept. 11, 2001 honoring more than 1,000 heroes.

The flag will be delivered in a state-by-state escort that will originate in Texas, said Chris Heisler, president and co-founder of The Honor Network.

WNC Baseball: Former Wildcat Harber beats deadline, signs with Brewers

Given two prior opportunities to sign with a Major League Baseball team, former Western Nevada College two-way player Conor Harber couldn't pass up a third.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Harber came to terms on Thursday, July 16, just a day before the deadline to sign amateur players from the MLB Draft in June.

"He was very deliberate," said WNC Baseball Coach D.J. Whittemore. "He's had opportunities to sign in the past and has shown a lot of maturity, paying his dues and working to perform well at the level he's at before jumping to the next level.

The 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe was the scene of the Korbel Hole-in-One contest Friday at the American Century Championship, bringing together some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment to help raise money for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

WNC Baseball: Yankees, Brewers sign former Western Nevada College players

Two Major League Baseball franchises, including the league's most decorated team, have recently armed themselves with past Western Nevada College pitchers.

The New York Yankees, winners of 27 World Series titles, signed former Wildcat pitcher Cody Hamlin to a free-agent contract on June 23. More recently, the Milwaukee Brewers signed former WNC relief pitcher Evan Parker, and have not yet come to terms with Conor Harber, who starred for the Wildcats on the mound and in the outfield during the 2013-14 seasons.

WNC Baseball: Harber Makes it 3 for 3 in MLB Draft; Peters also selected

Conor Harber is batting 1.000 for the Major League Baseball draft since entering Western Nevada College in 2013.
The University of Oregon right-hander was selected in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers on the final day of the draft Wednesday, marking the third straight year that the former Wildcat pitcher and outfielder has been selected.

WNC freshman outfielder DJ Peters was selected for the second time in as many years. The Texas Rangers took Peters in the 36th round. Peters was also chosen a year ago in the 36th round by the Chicago Cubs.

Sports legends, celebrities sign on for 26th American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe

There’s one place where NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB rivalries meet annually to settle old scores. The venue: Lake Tahoe. The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.

A blockbuster lineup of sports legends, all-stars, Olympians and hall of famers plus Hollywood celebrities of film and television will go tee to green July 14-19 at the 26th American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

WNC Baseball: Karnos, Bickford Put on PItching Show at CSN

Major League Baseball scouts coming out to see highly touted right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford on Thursday saw a couple of other arms to focus their radar guns on in Henderson.

Western Nevada College sophomore right-hander Max Karnos allowed just one hit through the first six innings and sophomore reliever Connor Zwetsch threw 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief as the Wildcats nearly handed Bickford his second defeat of the season.

MLB Awards for 2014

AL Manager of the Year: Ned Yost (KC Royals): What Ned has been able to do with a very young team there isn’t a lot of managers that could do it.
This award has been a couple of years in the making for Ned. This team has been on the brink of making the playoffs for the past couple of seasons and this time they were able to break through for the first time in 29 seasons.

The published research project, “The Impact of Temperature on Major League Baseball,” applies statistical data analysis to determine how temperature plays a role in the MLB.

Major Sports Need Major Overhaul In Domestic Violence Policies

So for the last couple of weeks we have seen the issue of domestic violence come into the forefront of major sports and its athletes. The NFL of course taking most of the attention with the Ray Rice turmoil. MLB has also been put into the spotlight when its commissioner Bud Selig was asked about the issue during his farewell tour in San Francisco. Here is part of what he had to say on the subject:

WNC Baseball: Busy final MLB draft day as five former ‘Cats taken

Growing up only a half-hour away from Seattle in Maple Valley, Wash., the Seattle Mariners have always been Taylor Smart’s baseball team.

The former Western Nevada College infielder’s boyhood dream of one day playing for the Mariners became closer to reality on Saturday when the Mariners selected Smart in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats bring handful of prospects to MLB draft

One of the great mysteries of sports is the amateur baseball draft. With the largest pool of players under consideration for draft selection than any other major sport and ball players being scouted from a variety different levels, there is plenty of uncertainty to go around.

Even with a 40-round format, many outstanding players go unselected by a Major League Baseball team. However, a draft hasn’t gone by without at least one Western Nevada College player being selected since the Carson City baseball program formed in 2006.

Buffalo Wild Wings prepares for Nov. 18 Carson City opening with zesty offer to first 100 in the door

To be sure there's a packed grand opening at the sports bar and restaurant being built at 3815 South Carson Street, the owners are offering quite an incentive: Free wings for a year for the first 100 people who walk in the door at 11 a.m. Nov. 18.

Graham's Word: AAA All-Star Weekend A Great Success For Reno And Northern Nevada

All-Star Weekend was a huge success for the Northern Nevada area. The Fanfest festivities were a great way to kick off the big weekend. The events included appearances by former San Francisco Giants JT Snow, Robb Nen, Steve Finley, and Jack Clark. There were great interactive things for the fans to do as well: Batting cages, test your pitching speed, see how fast you could steal home, and my favorite thing was the whiffle ball home run field they created in the Reno Events Center.
