The National Weather Service (NOAA) has issued a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. PDT on Saturday, October 10, 2020 for the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Forest Service campgrounds in the Lake Tahoe Basin are scheduled to open May 12, 2017. However, campgrounds on the West Shore still have a large amount of snow at lake level, which will delay their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, 2017, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2, 2017.

The potential for smoky skies in the valleys and hills above Carson City may surface again next week with plans for prescribed fire operations throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team announced Friday.

UPDATE: Homewood Mountain Resort opened Thursday for top-to-bottom skiing and boarding a day after a structure fire destroyed its south lodge. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters from throughout Lake Tahoe were called early Wednesday morning to a two-alarm fire at Homewood Mountain Resort on the west shore that has caused significant damage and has forced the resort to close during its busiest time of the year.

UPDATE 6PM: CalFire reports firefighters have made significant progress on the Emerald Fire. Rain has held the fire progression. No reported injuries or structure damage. The fire is 80 percent contained. Evacuations have been lifted.

UPDATE 10:15AM: Emerald fire burning near South Lake Tahoe is approximately 250 acres in size burning in timber on National Forest System and California State lands at Emerald Bay and Cascade Lake. It's being fueled by strong winds that are ahead of the incoming storm system that have been fanning the fire in different directions resulting in dangerous rates of spread. Rain has been falling in the area, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

UPDATE 9:40AM: The Emerald fire has burned 200 acres so far and containment time is unknown. Wind gusts in the fire area are up to 70 mph. Rain is heavy at times which is helping to put the fire out. No flames are visible from Baldwin Beach. Highway 89 is closed from Camp Richardson to the Vikingsholm parking lot. Evacuations are still in place.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued Friday morning for about 500 homes near South Lake Tahoe because of a 200-acre wildfire burning near Cascade Lake, a fire that started at about 1:30 a.m.

The fire, dubbed the Emerald Fire has caused mandatory evacuations at Spring Creek, Cathedral, the west shore of Fallen Leaf Lake, Cascade Properties and Cascade Lake.

UPDATE 6:22PM: The Little Valley Fire has burned more than 2,000 acres and 22 homes. The fire is burning west of Franktown Road, moving north toward Bowers Mansion and Joy Lake Road. The Unified Command transitioned to the Sierra Front Type 3 Incident Management Team at 5 p.m.

The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to open April 30.

Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The five-year, $305 billion federal transportation bill passed by Congress and signed into law Friday, Dec. 4 by President Obama includes a provision that will steer additional money to Lake Tahoe communities for roadway improvements and enhanced public transit service.
