Sensitive groups include people with lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children and teenagers, and people who are active outdoors. People who fall in this group should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

CARSON CITY — More than 200 Carson Middle School future Health Occupations Students of America earned real-world healthcare certifications. Nearly all the students taking Ms. Victoria Jaacovi’s Introduction to HOSA class and Mr. Dayne Carmichael’s Sports Medicine class finished the 2018 school year certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR.

Hello Carson City! It’s been a bit since I’ve written a column. May has been a whirlwind, which started with a pre-graduation meditation retreat with Mindful USC. I was honored to be one of two alumni present on a silent meditation retreat with 30 people. The remaining 28 were USC professors and employees. After the retreat, I worked in Los Angeles for two days before participating in commencement activities.

Hurl Mahurin lost his wife, Linda, to breast cancer in 2014. She was diagnosed at stage 4 three years prior, and the cancer eventually ate away at bone and tissue in her back and leg.

CARSON CITY — In a report released this week, the National Safety Council notes Nevada has enacted comprehensive policies and practices to eliminate opioid overdoses and prevent prescription drug abuse. The publication titled Prescription Nation, provides state rankings based on the implementation of six key actions identified as model policy and practice in addressing the opioid epidemic.

Retired Carson High School teacher Brian Reedy of Carson City will join more than 300 other advocates in Washington, D.C. March 19-21 to meet with their Members of Congress to share their stories of the personal impact Parkinson’s disease has made on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

Dr. Gedney will also discuss her experiences in caring for inmates over a three decade career. The lecture will be presented February 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Offices, 911 East Musser Street. Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Jacob Pipho, from Carson City, placed first in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. He competed against student winners from several other states and will receive $1,000 for his poster, “The Element of Surprise.”
