The vehicle was without a front license plate and its back plate is possibly California. When Patricia Cabrera and her family walked through the doors Tuesday night, it was to a loud cheer from every crew member: “Welcome to McDonalds!”

Cabrera just so happened to be the first “official” customer of the new McDonalds on Winnie Lane and Carson Streets. She was among the 300 first customers, all of which received a free Big Mac per week for a year. Other prizes were given to customers as well: gift cards, coupons for free coffee, free ice cream cones. These gifts were the reason hundreds — well over that first 300 — lined up hours before the store officially opened at 6 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe forced to repeal sex offender ordinance

Due to a ruling by the California Court of Appeals, the City of South Lake Tahoe can no longer enforce their sex offender ordinance that made it a misdemeanor for sex offenders to be within 300 feet of a school, park or recreation areas.

At its May 20, 2014 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council had to repeal the ordinance. To be official, the City Council will have a second reading and vote on the item in June.

"This is mind boggling," said City Councilwoman JoAnn Connor. "I am disgusted that the court has decided to ignore children in deference to sexual predators."

Rebuilding of Winnie Lane McDonald's underway

I've been hearing whispers of this project for a while, and it looks like it's finally getting started. The McDonald's at Winnie and Carson is the oldest McDonald's in town. I don't know how long it's been there but it's definitely since the early 80s or the 70s. Maybe some Carson City old-timers would know. As such an old restaurant, it's starting to show its age and has been in bad need of a renovation. Sometimes, though, it's easier to just start from fresh.

Carson High School Uniform Debate

Why am I opposed to school uniforms at Carson High School? It’s a lengthy answer and so I’ll try to condense it. We live in a small town, with limited selection to stores. We have Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenny, and Kohl’s. We have access, in Reno, to those listed plus several more, but only a fraction of the stores that you would have in a big city. My daughter has been in the current SSA “uniforms” at the middle school for the last 2 years. Additionally I have a buying background in the fashion industry for 8 years, so I have that perspective to my argument as well.
