Fundraiser Sunday in Carson Valley for family of fallen Carson City sheriff's deputy Howell

A fundraiser will be held Sunday for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell at the 5 Clover Ranch in the Carson Valley.

The all-day fundraiser will feature special guest Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt and a video appearance by actor Joe Mantegna, of "Criminal Minds" and "The Simpsons." Headlining band will be Lavish Green. One hundred percent of the profit proceeds from the benefit will be presented to the Howell family.

Disabled American Veterans gives first Western Nevada College scholarship

The Reno Chapter No. 1 Disabled American Veterans organization has awarded the first-ever $1,000 scholarship to go to a Western Nevada College student. The scholarship, administered by the Western Nevada College Foundation in Carson City, will be awarded in November to a disabled veteran, or the dependent of a disabled veteran, at a dinner in Sparks Nov. 6.

I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: August 29-30

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Marine Corps League of Carson City outreach event to help family of Deputy Howell

This weekend the Marine Corps League of Carson City will hold its annual outreach event with half of the donations to go to a fund establish for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy and former U.S. Marine Carl Howell.

This weekend the Marine Corps League of Carson City Silver State Detachment 630 will hold an annual outreach event at the Walmart store on Retail Drive on Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This outreach is for charity donations to the good of our community which includes Carson City, Dayton, Virginia City, Minden and Gardnerville.

Vintage aircraft at Carson City Airport Sunday to mark end of WWII

The Carson City Airport will have a number of vintage airplanes on display this Sunday, Aug. 30 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an event to celebrate the end of World War II.

Cactus Air Force Wings and Wheels Museum will have several pieces of vintage aircraft at the airport. The community is invited to this free event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end to World War II. Among the aircraft is a WWII era TBM avenger fly as well as plenty of other planes and vehicles from both WWII as well as Vietnam.

Thousands mourn slain Carson City sheriff’s deputy Carl Howell at funeral service

RENO, Nev. — Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell was remembered for his heroism and being a “true warrior” by those who knew him best as they shared their memories among thousands of mourners who gathered for a funeral service Thursday at Reno Events Center.

Howell, 35, died Saturday, August 15, 2015 in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call at an East Carson City home. He was married to wife Rachel and is a father of four children. He was a nine year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff's Office having started serving in March 2006.

WNC student veteran, community servant receives gift of refurbished vehicle

What better way is there to celebrate America’s birthday than to provide a life-changing gift to someone who has served our country in the U.S. Marines and Navy?

For the second time in seven months, Western Nevada College has worked with National Auto Body Council Executive Director Chuck Sulkala, State Farm Insurance Company, and the Recycled Rides project to donate a refurbished automobile to a deserving community member.

U.S. Marine helicopter training begins in late July at Lake Tahoe Airport

The U.S. Marine Corps will be in South Lake Tahoe on a 13-day training mission July 27 through Aug. 8. The Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 is based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Squadron 303 trains all of the future pilots for the Marine Corps Cobra and Huey fleets.

The training will include day and night flights of multiple aircraft between Lake Tahoe Airport, Minden-Tahoe Airport and Carson City Airport.

Toys for Tots campaign enters into final stretch for the holiday season

WNC Scholarship Workshop for Student Vets on Dec. 11

Western Nevada College has scheduled a free workshop on the Carson City campus to help veterans apply for college scholarships.

The two-hour workshop is being presented by the Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Dec. 11, 1 p.m. It will assist veterans in applying for WNC scholarships through the WNC Foundation Scholarship program, as well as two $500 scholarships provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America.

He was a talk radio host on station KKOH in Reno for five years as well. He was fired due to outrage over comments he made to the effect that the United States should not have such a strong relationship with Israel.[1]

Funeral services for Nevada Assemblyman Pete Livermore of Carson City will be Monday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m., at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Livermore died Monday, Oct. 20, 2014 at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 73.

Longtime Carson City businessman, elected leader Pete Livermore dies

Pete Livermore, a longtime Carson City elected leader and business owner, died Monday at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 73.

Livermore was a Nevada Assemblyman who decided this year that he would not seek re-election. He began in the Assembly District 40 on Feb. 7 2011. Before that, Livermore was a member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, 1998-2010; was Mayor pro Tem, Carson City, 2004-2006.

Nevada National Guard, Gov. Sandoval remember IHOP shooting victims in memorial run

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval joined more than two dozen soldiers and airman, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and families Saturday to pay respects by jogging in a memorial run in Carson City to commemorate the four victims who died at the International House of Pancakes shooting on Sept. 6, 2011.

Shooting survivor Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Mock and Gen. Michael Hanifan, commander of the Nevada Guard, led the pack of runners and walkers on the 5K route from the restaurant to the Guard complex on Fairview Drive in Carson City.

Nevada Guard Memorial Walk/Run Saturday in Carson City to commemorate IHOP shooting victims

Soldiers and Airmen of the Nevada Guard will participate in an informal memorial run/walk Saturday to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting on Sept. 6, 2011. The run/walk will start at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 6 a.m.

Shooting survivor Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Mock will lead a pack of Guard runners and walkers on a five-kilometer route from the restaurant to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive in Carson City. Tracy Kelly, widow of Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, is set to greet the runners at the finish of the route.

Boys and Girls Club kids party at back to school bash, adults get their turn at Sept. 7 luau

A back to school bash Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada turned out to be a big end-of-summer safety splash for its members.

With the last-minute cancelation of Carson City’s National Night Out because of recent heavy rain saturating Mills Park, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office took some of the donations for the event and turned them loose for the hundreds of kids at the Russell Way club.

With ongoing requests for children's Christmas gifts still being taken, the Toys For Tots program in Carson City was presented with generous gifts of cash and children's toys on behalf of the Capitol Police division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety and the Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers' Association.
