Plank Owner Master of USNS Carson City to speak at November Navy League meeting

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting! We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker will be Captain Robert T. Wiley, plankowner master of USNS Carson City, (T-EPF 7). Captain Wiley assumed this command on January 16, 2016 when the USNS Carson City was christened at Austal USA Shipyards in Mobile, Alabama.

Carson City veteran named Nevada Veteran of the Month

A retired United States Marine gunnery sergeant has been named Nevada Veteran of the Month by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).

Frank Reynolds of Carson City was selected by nomination for his work serving fellow veterans both in the community and statewide.

Carson High grads honored for becoming U.S. Marines

There’s a reason why the United States Marine Corps chose “Semper Fidelis” as its motto.

A local contingent of the Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment embodied the Latin phrase, meaning “always faithful,” Tuesday afternoon by visiting the Salvation Army Church in South Carson City to honor and pay their respects to the newest members of their distinguished ranks.

Navy League Speaker from Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center

The Carson City Council is the local branch of the Navy League of the United States. We meet on quarterly basis, conducting a dinner meeting with informational speakers that talk about a wide range of topics and the Sea Services missions.

This quarter’s Dinner and meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The Social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

This meeting’s guest speaker will be Captain Ted Powers, USMC. Capt. Powers is the Headquarters Company Commander at MCMWTC, Pickel Meadows, CA.

Carson City memorializes Deputy Howell, fallen capital city officers with permanent wreath

A brief ceremony was held Monday at the Carson City Sheriff's Office building to honor Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call a year ago on this date, August 15, 2015.

The ceremony was attended by Howell's family members, sheriff's office staff and personnel, the Carson City Fire Department and city leaders.

Remembering with Gratitude: Carson City veterans, volunteers place 1,400 flags at cemetery

Veterans organizations and volunteers from the Carson City area placed nearly 1,400 U.S. flags over memorial grave markers Friday afternoon at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Vietnam veterans groups, Fleet Reserve Association of Sierra Tahoe, the Disabled Veterans of America were joined by NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. In nearly 30 minutes, all the flags for the ceremony had been distributed and were placed over the markers.

Memorial Day flag placement Friday at Lone Mountain, Monday ceremony at Stewart cemetery

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veterans organizations from the Carson City area will place 1,200 U.S. flags on veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Friday, May 27 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other groups will be assisting, including some members of the NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. Volunteers are welcome to help place flags and youth groups are encouraged and welcomed to participate.

Vet Center provides curbside service for Carson City veterans

Military veterans who have difficulty traveling outside of Carson City for Veterans Administration (VA) services have the benefit of some of those resources coming to them.

Perfecto Manuta, a Readjustment Counseling Technician with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, coordinates the Mobile Vet Center, an outreach on wheels for the Reno Vet Center.

Vietnam veterans honored at ceremony in Carson City

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

Benjamin Busch served 16 years as an infantry and reconnaissance officer in the US Marine Corps, deploying to Iraq in 2003 and 2005. His memoir Dust to Dust ranges from a boyhood of fort building and exploration in rural New York to deployment during the worst of the war in Iraq.

He is also an actor, director and photographer, who portrayed Officer Anthony Colicchio in The Wire and is the writer/director of the film BRIGHT. He has been a contributor to Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, NPR’s All Things Considered and The Daily Beast.

Carson City Navy League Meeting to Feature USNS Carson City and USS Nevada BB-36

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, February 17, 2015 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

Our speaker will be Mr. Wayne Scarpaci, naval artist and historian, who is an authority on the Battleship USS Nevada, BB-36. The 100th Anniversary of the Commissioning of USS Nevada will take place on March 11 of this Year.

Carson City community rallies around 103-year old WWII veteran to provide dental care

The adage says it takes a village to raise a child, but this week northern Nevada proved that it takes more than a city to care for its citizens.

World War II veteran Frank Minervini is celebrating his 103rd birthday with much needed dental work provided by Randy Wright, DDS at Advanced Dentistry by Design in Carson City after a series of communications that began with a single email to Assemblyman P.K. O’Neill, who represents District 40 including Carson City and parts of Washoe County.

Toys For Tots celebrates successful 2015 campaign

Semper fidelis is more than just the motto of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). It is a phrase to live by. Every year since 1948, the USMC has faithfully delivered Christmas joy to millions of needy children around the country.
That faithfulness will stand to benefit around 3,000 children this year in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

The deadline is Wednesday for donations to the Toys for Tots drive through the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Capitol Police sponsored by the US Marine Corps Reserves.

Local Walmart Stores Pull Toys for Tots Donation Boxes

The Marine Corps League, organizing the annual 'Toys for Tots' toy drive for families in need in the Northern Nevada region says local Walmart stores have removed donation boxes from area locations.

The Carson City store on Market Street and the store in Gardnerville on Grant Avenue, have allowed the Carson City Toys for Tots group to place donation boxes at their stores. The group says managers at the Topsy Lane location told them they were instructed by Walmart's corporate office not to allow the donation bins because Walmart as a corporation was only allowing donations to be made to the Children's Miracle Network.

Senator Square: Holiday craft fair this week, plus culinary teams up for Pie to the Rescue

The Carson High School Craft Fair coming this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21. Hundreds of crafters from all over Nevada and Northern California will fill both gymnasiums and halls of CHS. All money raised from the craft fair is donated to the various student clubs and organizations at CHS. Come support this annual tradition. Santa will also be on hand for photos.

Assemblyman PK O’Neill receives commendation from veterans group

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The United Veterans Legislative Council presented Assemblyman PK O’Neill with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of O’Neill’s service to Nevada veterans in the 78th legislative session.

Carson City Manager Joins the Nevada State EB-5 Regional Center’s Board of Directors

The Nevada State EB-5 (NVEB-5) Regional Center in Carson City has named Carson City Manager Nick Marano as a member to its Board of Directors. Marano was elected to the position.

Additionally, Marano mentors at the Adams Hub for Innovation and is a member of the Western Nevada College Institutional Advisory Council. Further, he has been an active member of International City Managers’ Association.
