United Way funds RSVP and Alzheimer’s care giving training sessions

“The NV Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Inc.(RSVP)has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to provide state of the art training for family caregivers and respite volunteers on how to more effectively assist persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers” said Janice R. Ayres, executive director and chief financial officer of RSVP. The training has been made possible by a grant from the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierras.

Outdoors with Don Q: The White Pass and Yukon Route train ride

This is the second in a series of four articles on a recent sightseeing and fishing trip that Elaine and I took to the Yukon in June. This one is about an unforgettable train ride over White Pass Summit.
We arrived in Whitehorse late on June 18 and the next morning, we left, bright and early, for an all-day combination tour bus and train ride from Whitehorse, Yukon to Carcross, Yukon; to Fraser, British Columbia; to Skagway, Alaska; and then the return to Whitehorse.

Born on the Fourth of July: Veteran remembers service

Wilbur Lane came into the world July 4, 1921 and is one of a handful of remaining World War II veterans who served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which entered the war Dec.7, 1941 when her planes found the Japanese squadrons attacking Pearl Harbor.
“It was the most decorated ship of WWII, called The Galloping Ghost because (the Japanese) couldn’t find us,” Lane said from his home in Dayton. “Every time they bombed us, they’d announce it on the radio in Japan.”

Heavenly resort at Lake Tahoe opens Friday for summer season

On Friday, June 8, 2012, Heavenly Mountain Resort will begin operating the Heavenly Gondola seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for sightseeing, hiking and dining. The Tamarack Express Chairlift will also operate, accessing miles of hiking trails with the best views of Lake Tahoe.

Food For Thought offers summer lunch program

Food for Thought announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program at Terrace Park in Carson City. Terrace Park is adjacent to Empire Elementary School. Lunch will be served to all children aged 2 to 18 who come to the park free of charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, gender or disability, and there be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

First Flume Trail Ride of the Year

Flume Trail Mountain Bikes officially opened for business on May 12th this year. The light winter snowfall has nearly melted off the lower trails, giving access to Marlette Lake and the Flume Trail. A few of us rode the Flume on Saturday, May 12th to go check it out.

Outdoors with Don Q: A four-day adventure in Eastern Nevada

On May 9 through May 12, six of us were on a fun-filled, four-day, outdoor adventure way over in Eastern Nevada. The six were: Bob “Slick” and Lynda McCulloch and Elaine and I, all of Carson City, plus Sal and Catali Quilici of Dayton.
We went to the Ely area to fish some of the waters in that part of Nevada because five of us (Sal, Catali, Slick, Elaine and I) are entered in the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA) annual fishing contest, and we were hoping to catch any of the following fish:
Rainbow trout or brown trout at Illipah Reservoir,
Rainbow trout or brown trout at Cave Lake,

SPARKS — An impassioned motion to revoke credentials for more than 300 delegates who arrived after the meeting began. Heated questions about the presence of guests and whether they were voting. An angry motion to remove the convention chairman. And that was just for starters.

More than 1,600 county delegates today gathered at the Nevada Republican Party convention in Sparks in a meeting that fluctuated between contentiousness and relative calm as the hours rolled on.

Outdoors with Don Q: A special way to celebrate a special day

Elaine and I just returned home from a special way to celebrate a special occasion. March 30 was our 10th wedding anniversary and we had wanted to do something out of the ordinary for that event.

When we were married 10 years ago, we took a 19 day honeymoon in Southeast Asia, which included Hong Kong, China; Singapore, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; and the last eight days at Bali, Indonesia.

Most interesting, we took my new mother-in-law, Mary Bottoms, with us!
I bet that very few of you took your mother-in-law on your honeymoon!

New restaurant opening in Carson Mall

A new restaurant is looking to be open for business by the first week of April in the location recently vacated by Paradise Cove Cafe on the Stewart Street side of Carson Mall.

Zen's Cafe is a family-friendly bar and grill that currently has two locations in Arizona. Owner Adrian Yap said he has had success even in tough locations by offering great fresh-made food and being accommodating to his customers.

"People just want to have a good time," Yap said. He envisions his restaurants to be Cheers-style local's hangouts, and even names many of his menu items after his customers.
