Services Saturday for WNC Professor Marilee Swirczek; Celebration of Life July 28 at final photo exhibit

A celebration of life for Marilee Swirczek, a Western Nevada College English professor and founder of the nationally acclaimed “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” photo exhibition, will be held Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the WNC Art Gallery as part of the final exhibit reception.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016, 9 a.m. at St. Teresa Of Avila on Lompa Lane.

Western Nevada College Professor Marilee Swirczek, driving force behind ‘Always Lost’ war exhibit, dies

Marilee Swirczek, a writer, professor of English, faculty member at Western Nevada College, and a driving force behind the highly acclaimed “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” photo exhibition, died Sunday.

Swirczek was project director for the “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” exhibition that originated in her creative writing class. The exhibition received nationwide recognition, with a national tour that began in 2010 and ends this July 29, 2016. Marilee was a former Carson City Supervisor from 1987 to 1989 and wife of Ron Swirczek, a member of the Carson City School Board. She was 68.

A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday in the area of Goni and College Parkway on suspicion of being a sex offender failing to register, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Obituary for Edward Arthur King

Edward Arthur King, died May 24, 2016, at Carson Tahoe Medical Center from the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born Dec. 4, 1937, in Los Angeles to Marcus J. and Josephine H. King.

He served in the US Navy, and later worked handling bills of lading and routing for Lee Way Motor Freight in Downey, CA.

He married the former Alyce Devorraux McDonald on Dec. 4, 1975.

In 1985 the couple moved to Carson City, where he was employed as inventory manager for American Building Company. He retired from there in 2006.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Remembering with Gratitude: Carson City veterans, volunteers place 1,400 flags at cemetery

Veterans organizations and volunteers from the Carson City area placed nearly 1,400 U.S. flags over memorial grave markers Friday afternoon at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Vietnam veterans groups, Fleet Reserve Association of Sierra Tahoe, the Disabled Veterans of America were joined by NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. In nearly 30 minutes, all the flags for the ceremony had been distributed and were placed over the markers.

Wungnema House Open House on Sunday

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding the first of several open houses for the Wungnema House in Mills Park on Sunday, May 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. The building is accessible by the Park entrance on Saliman Road, opposite the high school. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the Foundation.

Memorial Day flag placement Friday at Lone Mountain, Monday ceremony at Stewart cemetery

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veterans organizations from the Carson City area will place 1,200 U.S. flags on veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Friday, May 27 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other groups will be assisting, including some members of the NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. Volunteers are welcome to help place flags and youth groups are encouraged and welcomed to participate.

Carson City headstone project is about recognition, respect

When Melinda Cash started walking at Lone Mountain Cemetery in search of headstones for her genealogy hobby, she would frequently come upon a bare plot with nothing more than a small tin temporary marker — or often nothing at all — to identify the person buried there.

These weren’t vacant plots, but occupied graves without the dignity of proper, permanent burial markers.

The reality that some at rest in Lone Mountain Cemetery lack recognition from the living world left Cash with an unsettled feeling. It was enough to give her pause.

Senator Square: Gearing up for the Carson High School talent show

The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Jan. 4-10, 2016: Utility work will continue Monday through Friday as indicated below, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with possible flagger controlled traffic at the following locations:

Carson City area road report: December 14 to 20

Beginning Monday, December 14, there will be intermittent lane closures on Carson Street throughout the week due to utility work as part of the Downtown Carson project.  In addition, Third Street will be temporarily closed to through traffic between Carson and Curry Streets for a brief time period.  Detours will be signed.

Donors sought for Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner fundraiser for Greenhouse Project

It’s that time of year again, when sponsors are sought to support the Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner, hosted by Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City and now in its sixth year.

A major donor, (composed of one donor or many) for the amount of $5,000 is still needed. The $5,000 match is collected through donations both large and small, by dinner patrons.

Walk Carson City: 2.5 miles of history awaits exploration
