It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. Thanks to support from our generous neighbors in Northern Nevada, progress is being made at the Veterans Healing Camp complex in Silver Springs. There is an exciting new life to the property. The three-bedroom group home has been completely cleaned out, repainted and new carpeting has been installed. There is a veteran moving into the home who is ready to help other veterans in need.

Attention veterans: The RSVP program in Carson City and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office have partnered for a new program called “VIPS for Vets.”

Unemployed and underemployed military veterans in Northern Nevada are encouraged to take advantage of a new employment program designed to give them the edge in establishing a new career.

Get your tickets now for the Annual Nowruz “New Year” Celebration Feast to benefit Veterans Healing Camp on Tuesday, March 21 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Casino Fandango Buffet Banquet Room in Carson City.

This casual and festive fundraiser features great food, music, dancing, silent auction and door prize. Nowruz is the ancient Persian “New Year” celebrated since 1700 B.C. that occurs on the first day of spring at the vernal equinox. Please treat your favorite veteran to a night on the town and support this great cause.

Construction is underway in Carson City to change the lives of local veterans. "They provided a service to the US; we wanted to be able to provide services to them as well," FISH Executive Director Jim Peckham said.

On Jan. 11, Gov. Brian Sandoval will present Linda Haigh, founder of Northern Nevada Dental Health Programs’ Adopt a Vet Dental Program, with the Veteran Supporter of the Month Award. This award recognizes Nevada citizens who dedicate themselves to easing the transition between military and civilian life for veterans and supporting veterans in need.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association, Sierra-Tahoe Unit #137 donated 10 Thanksgiving boxes to local veterans. The boxes included all the food necessary to prepare the meal. A turkey with all the trimmings, potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, pumpkin pie mix, crust and the pans! In addition, canned food items, oranges and basics were included in the box.

This Veterans Day, RISE Carson City, Carson City’s first medical cannabis dispensary, is giving back in a big way. 10% of all sales this Friday, November 11th will be donated to Northern Nevada Veteran’s Resource Center.

“As a Vet and a registered medical cannabis patient, it’s incredible to be part of a team that cares so much about the community, particularly the Veteran community. It hits home and it means a lot,” said RISE Assistant Manager Brian Church.

As they’ve done in years past, Walton’s Funerals and Cremations is collecting new and gently used coats, sweaters and gloves throughout the month of November for homeless veterans in Northern Nevada.

There's an old proverb that says, "a friend in need is a friend indeed."

For the needy in Carson City and surrounding rural counties, there may be no greater ally than Friends In Service Helping, otherwise known by its familiar acronym FISH.

A car wash is being held Friday afternoon in southeast Carson City to help a Redding, California youth ensure that unattended veterans' graves receive the honor and love they deserve.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Join "STEP" for our fundraiser to raise money for local Veterans and kids from the Boys and Girls Club for therapeutic riding sessions. We will be outside the CAL Ranch store at 2035 N Carson St. on Saturday June 25th from 11-2 selling hotdogs, drinks, and raffle tickets for wonderful prizes! We will also have Moses the Clydesdale and Flash our miniature horse on hand to visit with. So bring the kids out for a fun time!

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veterans organizations from the Carson City area will place 1,200 U.S. flags on veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Friday, May 27 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other groups will be assisting, including some members of the NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. Volunteers are welcome to help place flags and youth groups are encouraged and welcomed to participate.

Members of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC) met Wednesday afternoon to discuss changes within existing member organizations, as well as to welcome new members onto the council.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both veterans, attended Wednesday's meeting and highlighted changes to the city's new, improved web site scheduled to go public by the end of May.

I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

Thomas Kraft considers his civilian life a work in progress. But to the case managers of the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center of America, he's been building a success story for himself since arriving in Carson City.

The 58 year-old United States Navy veteran and former submariner had been homeless for about 13 years when he arrived in Carson City last fall from Southern California, where he had lived for much of his civilian life.

Members of a community advisory panel met Wednesday to adopt a local charter for the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a statewide effort to bring veteran service providers and other community stakeholders together in a pooling of resources that would make access easier for the state's veteran population.

The panel approved making Carson City one of 10 community green zone councils across the state, calling its local initiative the Carson City Area Veterans Community Council (CCAVCC).

For its efforts in providing academic and advising support to military and veteran students, the University of Nevada, Reno has been designated as a “Top School” by the Military Advanced Education journal for its 2016 Guide to Colleges and Universities.

NevadaStaffing.com, a Veteran owned company will be hosting veterans meetings/job fairs all year beginning in May. Resources such as JOIN and Nevada Veterans resource agencies will be invited to attend and explain their free job training programs and other veterans support services.

One of the primary goals of Nevada Staffing is to help employ 100 percent of our veterans and we are committed to that goal.

In honor of WWII veterans, the Wings of Freedom Tour will make a return stop the first three days in June at the Minden-Tahoe Airport as part of their 110-day U.S. tour, airport officials announced Friday. The World War II aviation museum visited the airport last year.
