There can be no doubt, the Founding Fathers were among the elite of a young nation. At the time many were exceptional and provocative intellectuals by the standard of their era. However brilliant as they were, the Founders were not motivated to be historically recast as secular saints.
Some people choose to run for public office because they feel slighted by their incumbent opponent of local government and seek to stick it to incumbency.

Since when does the Carson City Chamber of Commerce promote and back a political candidate. Is it ok that almost every Facebook post the Chamber makes is immediately posted on Ronni Hannaman’s election Facebook page. Is it odd that Hannaman’s page has virtually nothing about her campaign.

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Also ahead, Carson City's GOP will host a discussion with several political leaders representing the capital city. There will be a 'Glorious Expanse' artist reception at WNC Gallery, plus library activities and more.

The Nevada Commission for Women unveiled a limited edition license plate celebrating women’s suffrage as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.

The plate itself is historic to Nevada, as it was the first assembly bill, Assembly Bill 499, to be backed by only women. Bills need a majority vote to pass any legislation, and this session was the first session any state in the country saw a legislature with a female-led majority.

State Assemblyman Al Kramer, Sheriff Ken Furlong and Justice of the Peace Kristin Luis will meet with the Carson City Republicans at the next general meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. Our political leaders will discuss their involvement with politics and how they are working with the community they serve. Our panel discussion will cover topics from them running for office, insights about their campaigns and how they are making an impact for our community.

This is the sixth column in a series presenting findings and conclusions of Nevada’s 2016 Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR), posted at controller.nv.gov. Here, we address the economic outlook.

In Nevada’s 2015 PAFR, we proffered an economic outlook focused on the long term. We identified four long-term secular trends that have suppressed US economic growth over the last decade – thus explaining the “new normal.” By their nature, these trends will continue to retard growth for the foreseeable future absent significant changes in public policy.

I created a group called Concerned Voters in Northern Nevada and it is for people from all political parties to get together and talk about local politics, issues, networking, debate each other, make friends, come up with ideas and also speak with candidates and elected officials.

It is for Carson, Minden, Gardnerville, Dayton, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Anyone is welcome to join no matter what their political affiliation is.

Below is my article that was published in Nevada Appeal (3/22/2014), although it is titled: Become educated, involved in local government.

For this column I will state personal views on a few topics: education, city employees, the Sheriff Department, the Board of Supervisors, ending with a little insight about Jim Shirk.

“I have extensive experience working with city government and the criminal justice system,” he said. “Carson City needs an experienced prosecutor, civil litigator and team leader to fill the important role of District Attorney and I bring that to the table.”

Karen Abowd, Supervisor Ward 1, filed for re-election on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, citing her desire to see through many projects currently in process, as well as her commitment to the future of Nevada’s Capital City.

“Carson City has gone through some tough economic times and continues to,” Abowd said. “We have needed to be careful in our planning and how we spend available dollars in order to create sustainable, relevant opportunities that have immediate positive impacts, and build a future we can be proud to leave our children and grandchildren.”

I spent most of January studying the faces of each Senatorial and Assembly lawmaker. I also tried to force myself to understand some of the bills, but I figured it would be better to just get the idea of it and learn along the way (which I did, and it worked). Reporting on big Nevada politics is new to me, and I’m eager to learn more.

Local politics gets into full swing when the Carson City Chamber of Commerce will host its Soup's On Supervisor Candidate Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Featured at the luncheon will be the contestants for the Carson City Supervisor Ward 2 race, Brad Bonkowski and Dennis Johnson and Ward 4 contestants incumbent Molly Walt and Jim Shirk. Questions will be fielded from the audience.
