On Thursday, March 21, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized two outstanding community organizations for improving the lives of local residents. Recognized at the club’s dinner meeting were Spirit of Home, represented by founder Ellen Jackson, and English Language Learners In-Home Program, represented by founder Florence Phillips. Both groups were presented with $500 donations in support of their extraordinary work.

Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Jessica Heitt, Urban Wildlife Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, will share her insights into the numerous wild creatures that inhabit the greater Carson City area with Leisure Hour Club members at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, March 21.

The Leisure Hour Club’s scholarship recipients and Western Nevada College will be the focus of the Club’s dinner meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15. As part of the Club’s commitment to education, three $1,000 academic scholarships are funded at Western Nevada College annually. This year the recipients are:

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will share her ‘life experiences’ related to growing up in the Nevada State Children’s Home. Located in Carson City, the facility provided a ‘home’ to hundreds of children, including Ms. Nishikawa and her brother and sister, between 1870 and 1992.

Lu Olsen, director of the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, accepts a donation from the Leisure Hour Club during its recent meeting in recognition of the exceptional work that the Museum and its staff does to provide a positive learning environment for children of all ages.
