Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognizes outstanding community organizations
On Thursday, March 21, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized two outstanding community organizations for improving the lives of local residents. Recognized at the club’s dinner meeting were Spirit of Home, represented by founder Ellen Jackson, and English Language Learners In-Home Program, represented by founder Florence Phillips. Both groups were presented with $500 donations in support of their extraordinary work.
Spirit of Hope is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit which has been providing housing for the homeless in the Carson community since 2010. The organization addresses homelessness through a model of care based on the housing-first philosophy — that without safe and supportive environments in which to live, the homeless cannot pull themselves out of the depths that led them there in the first place.
The second organization recognized was the English Language Learners In-Home Program, whose world-wide mission is to eliminate the barriers to social and economic opportunity for non-native English speakers. The group is a non-profit, educational service organization committed to teaching English, U.S. citizenship preparation and high-school equivalency at no cost for those in need. Since February 2004, volunteer tutors have assisted over 8,000 adult learners in becoming more secure and independent by learning to speak, read, write and understand English.
In making the announcement, Leisure Hour Club President Ed Schnabel noted our community and the world is a better place with the outstanding work of these two organizations. He added that the dedication and commitment of the many volunteers and donors who support both these groups is to be commended.
