It was a stroke of luck that Sam Clemens happened to hear a stump speech, satirize it, and send it over to the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, as that speech, and the letter it fostered, would trail blaze the literary birth of Mark Twain.

We all know who our Governor Steve Sisolak is, but we did not know him until he did his press releases during this COVID-19 Crises.

Dear Editor: A story titled, “Hunger Warriors” in Reno-Tahoe Edibles’ recent issue, stated The Greenhouse Project was built by Karen and Charlie Abowd. While this was a wonderful piece, this statement is incorrect. It is true TGP grew from a vision Karen had for a community that better served its food insecure.

Dear Editor,

As the owners of Mom and Pop’s Diner for the past twenty years, we have had our ups and downs, as any business does. We have been very lucky to have such a great customer base, and friends. We want to tell all the individuals who have given their moral support that it means so much to Jamesa and myself.

Because the Judge’s verdict has created so much of a stir, it has been better then any kind of advertising money could buy. Everywhere we go, somebody says that this is just wrong, and tells us that it is obvious that it is personally against us.

American ISIS bride Hoda Muthana wants to return from Syria. Guy Farmer agrees with Trump that she shouldn’t be allowed to come home because on the day of her birth her father was a UN diplomat exempt from US citizenship laws. Farmer believes “we should slam our golden door right in Ms. Muthana’s photogenic face.”

Legend tells of a terrifying monster that is supposed to reside in the depths of Walker Lake who has been sighted for centuries. For years, Cecil even had his own float in the Nevada Day Parade.

The legend of Cecil seems to have been first written down in the early-to-mid 1800s, when Nevada was first being explored by white settlers looking to spread out and maybe try their hand at finding gold or homesteading.

Recently, I was subjected to poor management at a new local restaurant in Carson City. We have all experienced poor management within our work careers and thought a friendly reminder should be sent out this Holiday Season.

The manager and the serving employees are the face of the business to their clients that patronize the food establishment. Management can make or break a business.

Fortunately for us, both men have a long record. Gary Schmidt has been an outspoken conservative on every issue for several decades. Like me, Gary Schmidt is a Goldwater / Reagan / Trump Republican. On the other hand, the NPRI rated incumbent state senator Ben Kieckhefer as the most liberal Republican over four sessions of the legislature.

In April the Nevada Appeal announced the top 40 Most Powerful Women in Northern Nevada. I was on the top 40 list.

There were over 11,924 votes and over 7,350 unique participants.

This Thursday the Atlantis had a luncheon with over 700 attendees to honor us and to vote for the top 20 Most Powerful Women in Northern Nevada.

It is an honor to say that I was among the top 20.

The Nevada Appeal had a letter-to-the-editor (dated May 1, 2016) stating:
The Downtown Project is more than aesthetics and declared: “Seventy percent of the total expenditures of the downtown project, currently underway, are for vital infrastructure improvements that are failing and run right down the middle of Carson Street under the medians.”

What do you want from your local Government ? Generally we answer that question with: Provide Fire and Police first. I suggest we have a more elemental need. We want the TRUTH. The residents of this community will see the wisdom of any service or project if it is based in the truth. The more the truth is shaded the more the residents will resist. Without truth there is no trust.

Neil Rombardo, the outgoing district attorney, submitted an opinion letter to Carson Now on October 10, supporting the candidacy of his assistant, Mark Krueger, for D.A. in Carson City. His letter briefly praises Krueger for his work experience and attention to crime victims. He then proceeds to criticize the other candidate for D.A., Jason Woodbury, through ad hominem attacks upon the people who support his election.

The Rest of the Story

This in reply to Mr. James O. Hartman’s letter to the editor in the May 21st issue of the RC. Mr. Hartman, I will address you in the first person in this reply. Facts are stubborn things.

Let me be clear that I draw a parallel to your reporting in the RC opinion page with what in the 30’s was called yellow journalism. Use of the journalism in the same sentence with your name does a disservice to journalists everywhere even those in the mainstream.

Please launch a full investigation of the Bundy Ranch incident last week.

This is a letter to the editor addressed to Carson City Board of Supervisor Jim Shirk: Jim, Your vote Thursday although disappointing was not a surprise. I believe either you have no experience in running a business and its challenges or you have no respect for the power of small business. We small business owners are also tax and fee payers to not only City, State but also Federal government. We are also the employers.

To the editor: We all were exposed to “Political Theatre” at its best and worst. The drama, fear mongering, and name-calling, with the same old threats seems old and tired today. It was a very bad, long movie, especially because everybody knew how it would end. But, we went ahead and spent millions to display the ineptness of our entire Government.

To All Fair-minded Americans: At this juncture in our history, we are facing a new terrorist threat. Not from a foreign entity but from a radical extremist sect of the Republican Party. The anti-American factions around the world must be rejoicing to see the government shutdown and know that all the ramifications of this action are caused by our own government.

Thank you Mark Robison for your Reno Gazette Journal July 7th Fact checker article concerning the lack of truthfulness (4 of 10) of a letter to the editor by Mr. Fred Voltz about Nevada's bear hunting program.

Although my opinion on Nevada's bear hunting program has not been finalized, my opinion on Voltz’s candor and misrepresentation of the facts is confirmed.

If Carson City really needs a new library, I have an excellent idea. Let’s just buy the Ormsby House. Not for sale? Make em’ an offer they can’t refuse. Think about it.

On the 1st floor: foyer, auditorium, and changing exhibit area, all adjacent to an outdoor plaza (current valet parking). Second floor will have main library desk, space for newspaper and periodical reading, and restaurant without outdoor seating. Floors 3, 4, and 5 would be the main library collection. Floors 6, 7, and 8: computer labs, meeting rooms, and BRIC.

Letter to the editor:
It was with great sadness that I read the Nevada Appeal report (Oct.6,) “Political Speech Leads to Pushing at Forum”. For many months I’ve tolerated mean, thoughtless tirades by a handful of people opposed to positive change in our capital city community. Everyone is entitled to his opinion, however negative and uninformed it might be.

Despite more than 10 years of outstanding service as a PUC senior economist, my friend Nevada Regent Ron Knecht was fired in March by the PUC bureaucrats, with no reason given and no announcement made.

This story was then intentionally leaked to the press, so that it would be reported just before voting started in Mr. Knecht’s primary re-election campaign. Ron won the primary handily, because voters are very aware his outstanding record, fine character, and dedication to public service.

In his letter to the editor, published in the December 24th Nevada Appeal, William Lepore Sr. admitted to being confused about American history, citing fake quotations from John Adams, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin to drive home his point. Dear Editor,

Is it the policy of the Nevada Appeal to print demonstrably false attacks on the editorial page? I'm referring to the letter to the editor on June 25 that claims, "There is incontrovertible proof that an ineligible usurper sits in the White House."

While I fully respect Kirk's decision to link comment posting to facebook, and also understand the reason he gives, I don't think it is the right step.

I've never heard about the major site "Techcrunch" which he mentions as having successfully implemented this, but I am sure everybody has heard about the major sites Los Angeles Times and CNN that implemented it as well and have since gone back to offering the traditional method of sign-up. Simply because too many participants refused to open a facebook account just to be able to comment; they simply don't trust this social network.

Boy Mr. Farmer and Mr. Joiner must have struck a very sensitive nerve with Mr. Neighbors. Steve Neighbors had a commentary article a week before Guy Farmers article telling us how concerned he is for Carson City's future. He proceded to tell us who he would vote for if he lived here. He endorsed Williamson and Abrowd (both for the Nugget Bail Out Project), but did not list any other issues (School Board candidates, School Bond, Governors race ect). Keep up the Good work Farmer and Joiner in making Neighbors accountable for all the facts not just the facts that benefit the Nugget.

I'm a taxpayer who has lived here for 20 years and my dream is not the same dream Mae Adams and her trustees dreams are!

I have a problem with a Boise, Idaho resident like Steve Neighbors telling me what's best for Carson City. We are already in the NEGATIVE with other projects (Pony Express and V&T). We have experts say that in this economy it might not be the best thing to start a new project. I kind of would like to see the "pay as you go, and if you cant pay, then don't go" theory when it comes down to tax payers footing more projects.

Several negative mailers featuring Assembly candidate Pete Livermore were sent out recently to Carson City homes.

These ads were sponsored by the Nevada State Democratic Party, which hired an outside firm to produce the pieces. They claim Livermore got a "sweetheart deal" from the city when it purchased land he owned in order to widen Clearview Drive.

When I left my newspaper job in September after 15 years with the same company, I wrote a farewell column.
