It seems that every four years we’re told that, “This is the most important election in history!” In 2020, that axiom seems more true than ever. As the president of the Nevada Republican Assembly, there are some important issues of which I’d like to make everyone aware.

Six Carson City and one Lyon County project are among 16 statewide recipients of Community Development Block Grant funding through a federal program administered by the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, officials announced Monday.

RENO — At a special Nevada System of Higher Education meeting held Thursday, the Board of Regents announced the appointment of former Gov. Brian Sandoval as the University of Nevada, Reno’s next president. He becomes the first Hispanic and 17th president of the 146-year-old University.

Gov. Sandoval, who is currently a Distinguished Fellow of Law and Leadership at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law among other endeavors, will begin Oct. 5, 2020 and serve a 4-year contract.

Mailers recently sent by the U.S Postal Service (USPS) make two incorrect recommendations to Nevada voters, including direction to request a mail-in ballot at least 15 days before Election Day and to add a postage stamp.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items for discussion include new shade structures in the downtown area, grant funding for fuel reduction, surplus city funding, and more.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

President Donald Trump’s campaign is narrowing its focus in a lawsuit against Nevada’s expanded use of mail-in ballots for the 2020 general election, now specifically challenging a provision allowing ballots received up to three days after the election to be counted if their postmark is unclear.

On Sept. 3, 2020 The Board of County Commissioners approved the five year Master Plan for the 9-1-1 surcharge. This fee was created by the Legislature to provide a dedicated funding source for 9-1-1 related services.

The upcoming 2020 General Election will be a first in the country's history, as it will be a primarily mail-in only election. On Saturday, August 29th, at approximately 5:24 p.m., immediately following a Black Lives Matters demonstration in Carson City at the Nevada State Legislature Complex, Officers from the Legislative Police and Carson Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting that was later characterized as an accidental discharge of a weapon.

Legislative Officers immediately seized an AK-47 Assault Rifle and detained the suspect, a 22 year old Sparks man.There were no injuries reported and the suspect was described as cooperative at the scene.

Gov. Steve Sisolak will extend Nevada’s soon-to-expire eviction moratorium until mid-October, while trying to fast-track the launch of a renter mediation program and adding $10 million for residential tenant assistance payments.

Nevada Democrats have, for years, been fine-tuning their political machine. Two years ago was, perhaps, their best proof of concept. Democrats spirited away a key U.S. Senate seat, took control of the governor’s mansion for the first time in two decades and secured a veto-proof majority in one chamber of the Legislature while retaining a majority in the other.

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, an accidental misfire of a rifle occurred today at around 5 p.m. in front of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City following a Black Lives Matter rally.

It is wonderful to be back in school, to again see the smiling faces of young people walking throughout the building, going from class to class with excitement and anticipation, gently pushing at their friends to move along, so no one ends up being late to class.

Nevada’s decision to expand mail-in voting for the 2020 general election has become a partisan battleground, after President Donald Trump’s campaign sued to block the election changes put in place by the state’s Democratically-controlled Legislature in a summer special session.

When Will Truce and Jake Conway worked as high school teachers in Carson City, a colleague offered them some crystallized honey from his bee farm, and the two began experimenting with making mead, the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage brewed by fermenting honey with water and sometimes referred to as ‘honey wine.’

A group of protesters gathered Wednesday in front of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City to raise awareness about child trafficking and sex crimes against children.

Nevada Builders Alliance, owner of the Bank Saloon building in Carson City, have announced that Mangia Tutto owner Richard Bragiel will be the new operator of the historic location.

The bar, which is scheduled to open in October 2020, has undergone extensive renovations since it was purchased by the Builders Alliance in 2018. A group of about thirty Black Lives Matter protesters from Gardnerville, Carson City and Lake Tahoe took to the streets of Douglas County today, where they were met with hundreds of heavily armed counter-protesters, some of whom were physically and verbally assaulting the mostly-teenaged protesters.

Today, Governor Steve Sisolak signed Senate Bill 1 (SB1), allowing for certain courts to grant stays for certain types of evictions.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a proclamation on Wednesday to formally name racism as a public health crisis. Given Nevada’s diverse population as a minority, majority state, this call to action raises awareness so Nevada does not perpetuate poor health outcomes due to systemic racism during and after the pandemic.
