Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:
Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.

Keep Tahoe Blue Labor Day Beach Cleanup

The beaches can get thrashed with trash after the popular holiday weekend festivities. Help us keep our beaches clean! We provide cleanup materials, refreshments and a prize. Ride your bike to receive a special gift. Bring your reusable water bottle and friends!

19th Annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day at the Angora Burn Area in South Lake Tahoe. By pitching in, you can make a direct impact in restoring the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe.

The event is Sept. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Parking will be limited. Participants are encouraged to carpool or, better still, to walk to ride a bike. Participants arriving on foot or by bicycle will receive a surprise reward.

Eyes on the Lake

Eyes on the Lake is the League's volunteer program to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive plants in Tahoe's waters. If you are a water lover in Tahoe (SCUBA diver, paddler, swimmer, beachgoer, or boater) and want to help ensure Tahoe's waters stay clear and pristine, then Eyes on the Lake is for you. Volunteers will learn how to identify plants in the classroom and in the field. Help protect the Lake while you play. Training lasts approximately 2.5 hours. The fireworks went off in Carson City last night without a hitch, bringing the end of another incredible weekend. Today may feel a little like a Monday, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself. Check out the new Spirit of America show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Show. Our local Classic Cinema Club meets tonight and will be showing 'A Walk in the Sun' with Dana Andrews. If you feel like playing with fire, Controlled Burn meets at A to Zen to practice the right way to handle the flames.

Annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanups

After the July 4th festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash. This trash can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Be a part of the solution and help us this day to keep our beaches clean.

We will provide refreshments, cleanup bags, gloves, and hand sanitizer. Please bring your reusable water bottle, gloves if you have them, sunscreen, your friends and family, and a smile!

Each attendee will receive a raffle ticket for great prizes from Keep Tahoe Blue and our partners.

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

South Lake Tahoe area landscaping highlighted at annual conservation landscape tour

The public will have a chance to learn about sustainable landscaping in Lake Tahoe at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on August 19. The tour will begin at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden and continue down Pioneer Trail towards Meyers Station.

The weekend isn’t over yet. Enjoy breakfast at the Elk’s Club. They serve up pancakes and more every first Sunday. Genoa is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Sweet Sippin Sunday is like a mini wine walk, only this month the small businesses are serving up rum-based cocktails. Help keep Tahoe blue: the annual beach clean-up after the Fourth of July needs all the help it can get.

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

League to Launch Revamped Education Center in South Tahoe

Lake Tahoe ecosystem research gives insights on global change

A Scripps Institution of Oceanography-led study on how natural and man-made sources of nitrogen are recycled through the Lake Tahoe ecosystem provides new information on how global change may affect the iconic blue lake.

“High-elevation lakes, such as Lake Tahoe, are sentinels of climate change,” said Lihini Aluwihare, associate professor of geosciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. “Small changes in the lake’s chemistry can have big impacts on the entire ecosystem.”
