February means it's time to Share the Love. Current Kaia Girls can bring their friends any Saturday in February. And if you don't know a Kaia Girl, come anyway. We'd love to introduce you to our program. Open to women of all ages and fitness levels, KaiaFIT classes are designed to meet you exactly where you are. Our saturday workouts start at 8am and alternate between Power Hour (a full body workout focusing on function and muscle confusion) or I Kan Dance (our cardio-filled dance fitness hour).

Don't miss the next Kaia CORE session - Up and Out. Leave your Mark. Our five-week long CORE sessions are designed to build strength and endurance, giving you the motivation to stay strong, improve your physical fitness level, and maintain healthy eating habits. Our sessions offer two Kaia Kross Training workouts each week, plus I Kan Run, TRX, I Kan Dance, Kaia Flow, Kaia Ventures, and so much more. Keep the momentum going and take your post-BRIK fitness and nutrition UP AND OUT.

Our third ski & snowboard day! It's time to get out there. Meet at Kirkwood at 10:30am and we'll spend a fun day on the mountain. This is a non-coached event and everyone is welcome, including friends and family.

KaiaFIT Minden and Carson will be celebrating the end of their six-week BRIK session with a Kaia Red Party at El Charro Avitia, on Saturday, February 13th at 6pm. Come celebrate all of your hard work, wear red, and bring your friends and significant others. There will be a rockin' DJ and plenty of dancing.

Doctors have told Leslie McGarry her cancer is terminal, predicting she has between two to five years left to live.
She disagrees.

“I don’t feel like,” she begins, but pauses to cover her 5-year-old daughter’s ears. “I don’t feel like I’m dying,” she continues. “Medically, I get it. But I refuse that diagnosis.”

One technician put it to her bluntly. “You have an expiration date,” he told her.

“I laughed. I do have an expiration date, we all do,” McGarry said. “But that’s up to God. He has the final answer.”

Kaia F.I.T. have put together a Dec. 12 fundraiser run for an amazing local woman who is fighting cancer. When the going gets tough, the community hits the ground running. Registration for the McGarry Miles: A Journey in Faith 5K and 8K event continues until noon, Friday, Dec. 4.

Robey Willis, founder of the Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, urged participants to sign up early for this year’s golf tournament and other events.

“The golf tournament completely sold out last year,” he said. “It would be prudent for people to get in while they can.”

The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day will feature a 5K walk/run, bench press competition and golf tournament, on Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Willis said last year’s event was a success.

“We had a wonderful time,” he said. “It was just a ball.”

Kaia FIT, a women’s fitness program, is offering free classes in Carson City and Minden next week.
Starting Monday, women can attend any classes, which will be a mixed hour of endurance-based exercises.

Regular classes in Carson City are offered at 5, 6 and 8:30 a.m.; noon; and 5:30 p.m. Minden classes are 5, 6, and 9 a.m.; and 5:30 p.m.

Kaia FIT is hosting its fourth annual Paddle Board Triathlon at El Dorado Beach and the surrounding Al Tahoe neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe this weekend.
“It’s in Lake Tahoe so, of course, it’s absolutely breathtaking,” said Kai FIT owner Nikki Warren. “There’s great music and just a great atmosphere.”

The women’s fitness program, Kaia FIT, is opening its doors to the community for a free week of classes.
“Spring is a good time to start getting healthy for summer,” said owner Nikki Warren. “It’s spring cleaning for your body.”

Beginning Monday, women in Carson City and Minden/Gardnerville can drop in on any class that may interest them. Classes include cross training, TRX, running, cardio dance and a yoga and Pilates mix.

Western Nevada College’s softball team got glowing results from its annual early Saturday evening 5K Glow Run in Carson City. After adding some after-dinner entertainment to increase the number of participants, the Wildcat Glow Run on Saturday, March 21 attracted more than 100 participants to help raise approximately $5,00 for the softball program.

“It was our best turnout; the theme helped,” said WNC softball coach Leah Wentworth. “Thanks to El Charro Avitia for donating the food. It has added incentive for people to come.”

Saturday, California Chrome took the prize in the 140th Kentucky Derby. However, champions aren’t born that way. They are made. The horse’s owners didn’t wake up the day before the race and decide, “Hey, I’m going to race a horse and win the Kentucky Derby.”

They invested time, energy, training, and vision to help build up a champion. The race was a short 1-1/4 mile. But, the reward for winning was great. In fact, California Chrome took home a cool $1.4 million. Not bad for running a few minutes.

Completely FREE to the community is Tumbleweeds Gymnastics annual Family Fun and Fit Day.

We are promoting health and fitness in our area and fighting obesity through gymnastics and Kaia FIT, our women’s fitness program.

Fire safety, flaming barbecue burgers, face painting and face time with Smokey Bear were the orders of the day at the first Northern Nevada Fire Wives fundraiser barbeque at the Carson City Fire Department on Stewart Street Saturday.

The Northern Nevada Fire Wives will hold their first fund-raising barbeque from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, at the Carson City Fire Department at 777 South Stewart Street, to raise funds to support firefighters and their families when tragedy strikes them.

Food For Thought would like to think all the people who came out and supported us at our Saddle Up For Kids Events. Friday, June 28th’s dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and Saturday, June 29th’s Carnival at Mills Park wouldn’t have been as successful if not for our volunteers!

Two community runs will help Carson City residents prepare for then work off the upcoming Thanksgiving feast.

For those wanting to be proactive, Kaia F.I.T. will hold its fourth annual Gratitude Gallop 5K and 8K on Thanksgiving morning, which is a fundraiser for Food for Thought.

This fall, the Lodge Assisted Living Community is sponsoring SOLEmates, a month long program to help provide new athletic shoes to kids with The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada. The number of children who need help in Carson City is disproportionately high when compared to other communities of its size. Too many kids don’t have life’s basic necessities; some even tape their shoes to keep them together. The goal of SOLEmates is to acquire 300 pairs of new athletic shoes to help those kids run, play and stay active.

It’s hard to find fun things that the entire family can do within a budget.

The Carson High School Graduation Committee will hold the the Safe and Sober 5K on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 8 a.m., in downtown Carson City at 3rd and Curry Street behind The Firkin & Fox.
The event is sponsored by Kaia Fit. Money raised from the run will be used to provide the Carson High School class of 2011 seniors with an all-night party and a day trip to Discovery Kingdom.
