Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among more than 30 artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 24th annual Artisan Show and Sale Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Reno. Admission is free and at least 20 pieces of original art will be given away.

Welcome to Halloween and the last day of October, Carson City. Today is Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018. Activities today feature trick or treating at the Carson Mall, the Downtown Candy Crawl, a haunted house at Western Nevada College and a harvest festival in the Carson Valley. It's parade day in Carson City, which means a host of Nevada Day activities throughout the state capital all day long.

Of course, the 80th annual Nevada Day Parade is the centerpiece of the Silver State's 154th birthday celebration.

Eight days before the presidential election of 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the union. Hello Carson City and welcome to Friday, Nevada Day, Oct. 26, 2018. Today is the observed state holiday, where businesses are open but state and local government offices and schools are closed. Meanwhile, the capital city itself is getting warmed up for a three-day weekend and famed parade that celebrates statehood.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Carson City at the corner of Telegraph and Division streets offers its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Nevada's celebration of statehood provides for a bevy of activities that showcase the Silver State's best. From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

Mark your calendars to join Carson City Art Gallery on Friday November 2, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm as they celebrate the artwork of Erik Holland as Artist of the Month at his reception! Light refreshments will be served.

Erik Holland has worked as an artist his entire adult life. He started painting murals in Fairbanks, Alaska in the 1990's. He then moved to Reno, Nevada, achieving his dream of living in the high desert. He has had a one man show in Reno every year since 2001.

Silver City Arts and Carson City artists are forming a sister city alliance.

The event takes place Saturday, December 1, 2018 in the Silver City Schoolhouse Community Center located at 385 High Street in Silver City from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

The mighty U.S. Navy Blue Angels and fellow air show performers give an encore performance Sunday, the final day of the 2018 Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe Airport.

Keep your eyes to the skies and your ears to the wind for that famous navy blue streak.

The thunderous roar of jet engines will rumble across the skies above Carson City and the Carson Valley this weekend as the famed U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight team headlines the 2018 Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe Airport.

October in Northern Nevada means more than Nevada Day. There are also outhouse races, fall festivals and Oktoberfests; all three of which are happening this first weekend of October around the region.

Get a jump start on your holiday shopping on Saturday, Oct. 13 and help benefit programs that benefit the disabled. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Frost Yasmer Estates, 1009 East Fifth Street in Carson City.

Reno Open Studios is an opportunity to visit the artist’s studios and see them at work. You will learn what inspires them, witness their techniques, and be stimulated by their passion for the creative process. Carson City Art Gallery’s Artist of the Month for September is Roger Freeman, a multi-medium artist living and working in the Carson City area. During his reception you will be able to meet him and talk to him about his wonderful work.

Last month the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office visited a senior citizen for a Caring Neighbors referral. Caring Neighbors is a new program administered by DCSO, where qualified and uniformed volunteers call and visit the seniors in our community.

Juliette “Julia” Bulette was born in England in 1832 and quickly became the proprietor of the most lavish and prosperous brothel in Virginia City. She was beloved by all, and became an honorary member of the Virginia Engine Company Number 1 fire brigade.

It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header. According to the calendar, summer is coming to a close but South Lake Tahoe is refusing to acknowledge it. Tahoe South will host a magnitude of events extending the season from Labor Day into October with entertainment, culinary festivals, music, outdoor recreation, competitions and a lakefront laser show.

At Northern Nevada Coin we have seen a number of people bringing in gold jewelry that they have just purchased from a person on the street. The problem is that the jewelry is fake. In several instances the victim purchased the items from a mother with two children. Most of the pieces we have seen is marked 18K but contains no gold. The scam is someone approaching you with a story of needing money and wanting to sell their jewelry. Be aware that this type of activity may be a scam with fake jewelry.

We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. In the days of covered wagons, copious amounts of gold and silver, and dastardly highway bandits, the legend of the Prison Hill Missing Treasure still lives today, and people often comb the sides of Prison Hill in Carson City searching out the lost Wells Fargo gold for themselves, but it has yet to be found to this day.
