This is a panorama photo view of Carson City's wonderful tradition, our winter ice rink called Arlington Square. The panorama was taken on a quiet Thanksgiving night. This ice rink is polished and professional, and is set up on Carson Street, near Cactus Jack's, and across Carson Street from the famed Carson Nugget.

This ice rink is first class, and has skating rates as low as $5 on Family Night. This is a great place to spend a cool winter's night, or a sunshine filled day, in our town.

Outdoors with Don Q: Late winter offers lots of opportunities for staying busy

If you're not into traditional winter sports such as ice fishing, ice skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, there is not a lot to do in late winter...for most people.

Some choose to stare out the window, complain about the snow, ice, frost and darkness of wintertime and stay glued to their TV sets. However, there are plenty of activities to take your mind off our cold weather, dark mornings and evenings, if you would like to do so.

The downtown Carson City ice skating rink will close for the season on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.

According to Carson City Parks and Recreation, the rink has hosted 9,469 skaters this season, an increase of 16.4 percent over this time last year.

The department said they rescheduled the closing date because of a decline in participation.

"With our region's unseasonably warm weather we are finding families enjoying other outdoor recreational activities," read a statement sent out by the department.
