Column: Watch out for deer, other large wildlife

Anyone who lives near wilderness ought to know that wildlife comes with the territory.

Wild critters are no strangers to the front and back yards of Carson City residents. They also know their way around the streetscape pretty well, too.

Good morning, Carson City, and happy Sunday! Our area is always teeming with wildlife. This time of year around the Nevada state capital you will find wild horses, birds of prey and Mule deer, among others.

With mostly sunny skies today and a high temperature in the mid-to-upper 40s, you've got few excuses not to get out and see the Eagle Valley breathing with its natural life.

The legend of Cecil seems to have been first written down in the early-to-mid 1800s, when Nevada was first being explored by white settlers looking to spread out and maybe try their hand at finding gold or homesteading.

Mustangs at College Pkwy, Airport Road in East Carson City

A pair of mustangs were grazing on a common grass area at the corner of East College Parkway and Airport Road Saturday afternoon as traffic whizzed by.

Motorists should watch for wild horses, which have been spotted with some frequency in Northeast Carson City of late, and slow down if they are in the area.

Law enforcement has been called out multiple times in recent days reference to mustangs at the busy intersection.

Wild horses take a little dip in Washoe Lake during Thursday stroll

Reader Mike Cowan sent in this photo of our local wild horses who are for some reason deciding to walk through Washoe Lake on their Thursday commute.

The lake has been slowly emptying the last few months due to the dryer conditions, and apparently the horses are taking advantage of the shallows.

Swimmers should take note: you should always yield to swimming livestock because it’s more polite than cutting through the aquatic equestrian’s here.

With horses facing heat and uncertain future, industrial center companies create new water sources

Under a breezy blue sky in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center on Wednesday, water streamed out of a tan industrial hose and filled a small sink in the middle of the high desert. The water is there for free-roaming horses, says Kris Thompson, the property manager at the massive industrial center, known as TRIC.
