With Flag Day ceremonies across the state and throughout the nation, the Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177, in partnership with the Carson City Emblem Club. 507, celebrated its annual American Flag Day ceremony Friday. Guests were given a historical presentation of the flag and its importance as the symbol of our country.

The Carson City Downtown Business Association was recognized by Carson City Parks and Recreation for its donation of 17 new trees recently planted around town.

Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-27) is coming up, just around the corner, the weather is forecast for gorgeous conditions, and for countless folks in this general area, it will be their first big outdoor adventure of 2013.

So, where to go on that weekend? Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

So, be prepared for lots of company wherever you go or whatever you do.

Here is the Memorial Day weekend fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of May 22-28. Pack plenty of sunscreen, fill your cooler full of cold beverages and enjoy the long holiday weekend.

History fills every rivet, trestle, whistle blow and clatter of the tracks. On Memorial Day Weekend passengers can take a journey more than 150 years old and join the ghosts of miners, gamblers, persons of ill-repute and politicians on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

This Friday night May 24th, 6 PM at the Methodist Church in Carson City, Rick Gunn will be giving his soulcycler presentation. Words and Images from a 25,811-Mile bicycle journey Around-The-World. Soulcycler combines 350 breath-taking photos from 33 countries, set to music, accompanied by a selection of uniquely emotional stories from around the globe. Inspired by a series of formative experiences during his childhood, Gunn delivers a front-row seat to the pursuit of his lifelong dream of cycling the planet.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up DUI patrols for the coming Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday through May 27.

For the holiday period stretch there will be heavy saturation patrols for DUI drivers, a DUI checkpoint, and enforcing underage drinking laws. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that drivers in Carson City are safe and sober going into and during the holiday weekend, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

The Nevada Legislature received positive forecasts on the state’s employment opportunities during Wednesday’s Economic Forum in the capitol.

Nevada’s unemployment numbers are still the highest in the nation, but according to Bill Anderson, Chief Economist at the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, the number of unemployed Nevadans will likely continue to drop between now and 2015.

This is a story about history and Hollywood. Art imitating life. Often times when the two met, history took a back seat to hype and drama in order to insure good attendance at the box office. This time however, the story was so good, and so strong, that not even Hollywood could screw this one up. The year was 1950 and the film was titled: “Mister 880.” It was based on ten years in the life of Emerich Juettner, who was also known as Edward Mueller.

Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers made several misdemeanor DUI-related arrests through the holiday weekend and into the first part of this week. The most recent arrest was early Tuesday morning.

A 47-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 2200 block of East William Street and faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. According to the arrest report, officers called to a casino at around 1 a.m. after a witness reported an intoxicated man was seen getting inside a truck and preparing to drive.

It looks to be a soggy holiday Easter weekend for Carson City, and a snowy one in the Sierra above Lake Tahoe.
A weather system will move into the Sierra and Western Nevada beginning tonight and last through Monday, bringing snow to the higher elevations of the Sierra and up to a half-inch of rain for the valleys in Western Nevada, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Whether you're hoping for some weekend spring ski action at Lake Tahoe or plan to stick around Carson City for the Easter holiday, you may want to bring along a warm jacket and umbrella. Capital Christian Center will host a city-wide Easter Egg Hunt at Carson High School Saturday, March 30, beginning at 10 a.m.. There will be more than 12,000 eggs for the hunt, a holiday ham give away and pictures with the Easter bunny.

They will also be using the time to “beautify” the CHS campus as with 150-plus volunteers to pull weeds, rake, sweep, etc.

Why am I opposed to school uniforms at Carson High School? It’s a lengthy answer and so I’ll try to condense it. We live in a small town, with limited selection to stores. We have Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenny, and Kohl’s. We have access, in Reno, to those listed plus several more, but only a fraction of the stores that you would have in a big city. My daughter has been in the current SSA “uniforms” at the middle school for the last 2 years. Additionally I have a buying background in the fashion industry for 8 years, so I have that perspective to my argument as well.

UPDATED 6:22PM: High winds blowing into Carson City knocked down trees and cut power Wednesday to several places throughout town, including Carson Middle School where a downed line started a small brush fire.

The Carson City Library will launch a weeklong grand opening celebration of the new digital technology center, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Located on the second floor of the library annex, above the current Youth Department, the center has been introduced to computer-using patrons over the last several weeks and now the community is invited, according to a news release

Carson City and Carson Valley area casinos saw a slight decline in gaming revenue for December, while South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos had an impressive month, leading the state during the Christmas holiday period, Nevada Gaming Control Board figures show.

Carson City and Carson Valley area casinos pulled in $7,862,056 from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31 a decrease of 4.47 percent from December 2011 when casinos gaming revenues took in $8,230,093. The area surveyed includes Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and all other areas of Douglas County except Stateline at Lake Tahoe.

Pre-registration begins at noon today for 40,000 Burning Man tickets at $380 per ticket. The pre-registration period ends noon Sunday, Feb. 10. Burning Man officials are doing tiered first-come-first serve sales of the 2013 tickets.

According to the official Burning Man website, organizers say they've come up with a ticket sales plan to avoid scalping and to meet the needs of the "greatest number of people possible," given there is a limited supply available.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center would like to thank the businesses and community for their generosity during the 2012 holiday season!

Donations to support youth and families that suffer from food insecurity amounted to 79,792 lbs. of food through December 2012.

Ron Wood also serves as the Toys for Tots distribution center for our community. We were able to serve approximately 4100 disadvantaged children in 2012.

Four, fun-loving people from this area spent last Friday, Saturday and Sunday on an Amtrak train trip to and from Sacramento, Calif. Those four individuals were Bob “Slick” and Lynda McCulloch, plus Elaine and I, all of Carson City.

The purpose of this trip was to take a leisurely train ride on Friday over Donner Summit, so we could see and photograph the deep winter snow along the way in the high country, and then have two days of fun in Sacto.
It was a fun-filled three days, and here are some highlights of our adventure:

Getting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

This course covers the same material as the original Adventures in Photography but with greater emphasis on using all that new equipment you got from Santa! This course will teach you to recognize and overcome the common problems facing everyone starting in photography. You will be entertained by your instructor as he shares over thirty years of adventures and misadventures as an international photojournalist. Topics covered: The art of seeing, equipment, photographing people (formal & candid), working with children and pets, scenic (seascapes/landscapes), and introduction to Photoshop.
